BOTH are depressants, so they both act essentially the same way. As a matter of fact, benzos are often given to recovering alcoholics. So why would you need to drink alcohol, when that only potentiates the effects of the benzos. This is where I am confused the most.

i meant that it would be bad to just STOP both of them at once.

I know that's what you mean, but they're both depressants. It would be no different than taking 20 mg instead of 10 mg of valium, since all the alcohol does is potentiate the effects because it's also a depressant. People who are addicted to alcohol are often given benzos for treatment.

i know that... i was given ativan more then once for alcohol withdrawal.

its just that im cutting down SOOOOOO much on both that i still think im doing good. i understand your point but honestly if for a few days i have 3 or 4 beers before i stop its not gonna hurt me.
