Perhaps you may want to stay on topic... I can pop links that show any group being treated badly by someone somewhere...
We're talknig about Huck Fin, which is one of the archtypes of American culture along the Mississippi river in the mid 19th century. The status and history of women, or blacks, or anyone else in any other part of the world is irrelevant.
V V V Depends on the context wa bluska wica. If it's a close friend or a girl in the bedroom then yes it's a compliment. If it's someone on the bus or at church then no...

You`re right. This is wandering off topic. And I`m sure you can, but people think the word ****** is offensive because blacks have gone through hardships. and yet, women have, and still do go through horrible things everywhere, (there`s no talk of discrimination against men in those countries) and the same exact people aren't hesitant to use words like pussy, bitch, or ****. post whatever links you want, and I guarantee there`s not a slang for that group as common as `bitch`. (not that I`m some bleeding heart that thinks we need to keep everything we say politically correct. I`m just saying that those bitchy faggot beaner fucking jewish chink retard niggers that need to freak out over some slangs while using others that are just as offensive, are being totally hypocritical.)
um... actually we`re talking about the word ****** being removed from Huck Fin because of the status and history of blacks. The status and history of women is off topic, I`m done talking about that.
White people haven't always had it that easy either. Do you have any idea how hard it is to start a whole society on someone else's land.....
See, this is where you seem to be missing out on this totally though... We are not talking about it being used in everyday language... people who do things like that, make themselves seem like very small people indeed... We are talking about a piece of literature from the time when these things were common and accepted in society. We are talking about wether or not artists have the right to not have their works fucked with by people after their death... we are talking about hiding history behind white wash... So... perhaps if you wish to discuss the inequalities of inequalities, you should go make a new thread about it...
out of curiousity, are you against the countless abridged picture book versions of Huck Fin (made for a younger audience) that leave out the word ****** as well?
I am against any version that changes it from the way it is written.. which is what I have said from the beginning on this... It was written and published, when the author was alive, the controversy started then with it... and he didn't care... You know why? Because they were his words... He chose them to convey the feeling of the time... He used them appropriately in the book, as in from certain characters perspectives only, and didn't use them when other words would suffice... Go beyond all of that, and look at the character of the man himself... the things he wrote about and the way he wrote about them. He didn't like people editing his works while he was alive... He also felt that the only free speech there was, came from the grave... As in, the words of a person after they were dead. And here we are... deciding to censor his speech after he is dead... Such respect....
If you have to censor a novel in order to make it's tone appropriate for children, then there's good chance that children won't be able to understand the novel just yet anyways.
thats exactly why changing the word in order to expose more children to the book is not acceptable justification. this book shouldn't be read until high school in my opinion. its far too complex for anyone younger than that to truly understand it thematically.
Besides, if you wanted to print another book so people won't get offended there's no point. They know it's there and they're not learning. It was said, the children won't learn the truth. That will be the small spark to book banning. Banning a book in elementary school for being politically correct. That's what's wrong with our country.
I think its ignorant, its not directed direct against people, if the n word is dropped every black person in the room turns and are ready to fight, cracker or any of their terms for whites is said once it goes unaknowledged. People need to just chill.
As long as something is treated as offensive, it will remain offensive. you can try to hide it but that offense it still going to appear elsewhere. To abolish the offense conditioned by this word one would have to change the specific views and beliefs behind this conditioning. that means changing millions of people. Influence is a very powerful thing and its reach extends into ever corner of society but to have the majority accept a new meaning when the old one is so embedded in society is an incredibly hard thing to do. you cannot change those unwilling to do so.
