I think people need to keep in mind that this isn't a case where he was using the slurs throughout the entire book as if there was no significance to them.

He used them in context of what the characters were doing and thinking. When he didn't want to specifically use those terms, he used colored and negro, which were considered poilte at the time...

When he chose to use the slurs, it was done with purpose to illustrate that view being held by the character...

As one person I came across tonight said... it wasn't inoffensive when he wrote it and it isn't now... to use that as an excuse to change it is nonsense.

Let's translate all this into the proper perspective with a word from the publisher...

Oh but see that isn't quite right... lets fix that to properly represent what they really meant (as they are apparently no better at choosing their words then he was...

    I support this.

I also think we should remake Schindlers List without the word jew, starring Adam Sandler as Oskar Schindler.

That's correct. Neither does Publish America, Authorhouse, AEG Publishing Group, Hilliard & Harris, New World Media (aka American Book Press), Tate, Whitmore or any other vanity or subsidy press.

I've been a writer's advocate for over a decade now, working hard to expose scam agents, publishers, editors and display sites.

You have been arguing AGAINST the writer rights in this case.

There are plenty of scratch-n-sniff books out there as well as Where's Waldo? for those who don't wish to invest themselves intellectually in a good book. That's like saying, "I want to go to church, but I don't want to be preached to."

My 3 year old niece says the Thomas the Tank Engine series is a great read, they come in hardcover too. Might I suggest that?

Not what was intended though. With the elimination of the racial content one would miss half of what the book is about. If "****** Jim" isn't a "slave" or a "******", then why is Huck trying to help him to freedom?

The real original Thomas books, with their original watercolors and all, are fucking epic.

But I think we should edit it so there's no fat or thin controller, or kids might notice that not everyone is an exact carbon copy of everyone else. And also, there should be no big or little engines, just engines... better edit it so they're all the same.... and they should all be blue, none of this red or green crap. Who needs the morals the stories where meant to convey, which frequently centered on the fact that different people are different?

Well it's obviously not ok if we talk about how people are different or why it's acceptable for them to be so, the engines do brag about their own colors and deride others for their colors, so they should all be identical, and blue is the most prominent color, so that should be the universal one.

We also have to remove the differentiation between switchers and main line engines.

Wait, let's just burn the books.

    Right?:mickey:

I'm not reading any book full of blue fucking trains and no fat conductor in suit. My niece would be pissed! Her favorite is the little green engine Percy.

The blatant racism introduced throughout the book is what makes the ending so powerful.
It's like the people who decided to have this edited have never even read the book.
