My parents never even had a vise. A hacksaw, angle grinder and vise-grips would have been handy.

    Air compressor.
We used the dang foot pump for the small inflations.

Flat car tires had to be taken off and inflated at the station.

I own 2 air compressors now. Love em

I have many specialist tools for my work and they have completely different uses. so I could not choose one in particular. My water cooled granite cutter, costing around £6.000 would not be of much use wiring stage lighting. while my digital storage oscilloscope would not cut out a marble staircase.

In the home, by far the most time and effort saving device is the dishwasher. Having to wake up in the morning to piles of dirty dishes after having friends for dinner the previous night is just a distant memory.
Although we have one today, I would not miss the television. My late mother would not allow them in the house. She called them "Lunatics Lanterns".

My fingers certainly agree with you on that one. LOL

Have you ever worked on the new disk braking systems, where you have to plug in the computer to wind the calipers back.?
They are mostly used on vehicles with an electric parking brake

No. The time has long passed when I could work on my own car.

In my 55 years of owning cars, I have never taken them to a garage. On my first car, I rebuilt the gearbox. One of my cars did 300,000 miles with no major work. Looking after them in a preventative fashion is just a way of life for me.
Put simply. If a car drives better after a service, the service was done too late. You don't wait until half the picture is missing before servicing a cinema.
I now have 3 cars to look after, fortunately our youngest daughter took my advice and bought a VW, so I have all the computer diagnostic equipment.

On mine. There is a procedure to wind in the pistons for the parking brake without plugging in a computer. 1st time owning a car with electronic parking brake.

Normally, when a car has a handbrake mechanical lever to apply rear disk brakes, you use the tool that you describe.
However if the handbrake is applied via an electric button and releases automatically as you pull away the calliper is driven by an electric motor.
In this case, you need to use a program in the diagnostic software to run it back when replacing the disk pads.
I suppose that you could disconnect the motor from the calliper, but it would be a very tricky procedure and could easily register a fault code in the software causing the engine not to start.

Tools? My father was a banker and one Saturday when his lawnmower wouldn't start, he whirled it over his head and threw it in the neighbors yard! He didn't know shit about tools.

Screw gun. We had to cut the handle off a Philips head screwdriver and put it the corded drill.

Did NASA invent cordless power tools?
No. The first cordless power tool was unveiled by Black & Decker in 1961. In the mid-1960s, Martin Marietta Corporation contracted with Black & Decker to design tools for NASA. The tool company developed a zero-impact wrench for the Gemini project that spun bolts in zero gravity without spinning the astronaut.
