LOL, this is going to be interesting What are they then? The new Misfits, sure, they brought more of a metal influence... but Danzig's Misfits?
Danzig's are the only Misfits. They are closer to garage rock than punk. There isn't anything punk about them except for the style they wore.
Wrong. They style wasn't 'punk' at all. I mean, they should know- they more or less created goth punk, they had no one to inspire their look. They played LITERALLY three chords per song. That is the epiphany of punk. All the songs were fast and short. Punk. Plus, punk was influenced through garage rock anyways, so either way it's punk. It's like me saying the Clash weren't punk and were instead roots- because they now and again incorporated other influences. The Misfits just created a sub-genre which inspired loads on bands- for example A.F.I (anyone who thinks they are emo is a dick, obvously haven't heard enough) The Nerve Agents Balzac Calabrese The Nekromantix Zombie Ghost Train All of these bands are punk, but some like the Nekro's incorporate rockabilly into their music (it's psychobilly, I love the stuff). However they all share the horror punk look, singing about ghosts and zombie's and play in minor and not major like many of their peers. I like Danzig, he did something truly great- and that was expanded an already brilliant genre, be it punk as a whole. And Graves is great as well. People would have loved him is he hadn't stepped into big shoes. His voice is equally as unique, and had he been the first singer Danzig would have provoked the same reaction.
Their style is punk - that's all I was saying. So all songs that are three chords are punk? Metal was influenced by blues-rock which was influenced by blues - I wouldn't exactly call Muddy Waters a headbanger though. I'm going to ignore the tangent you went off, in which you defended AFI =P It seems we agree on Danzig and the Misfits' quality, you don't have to worry about that. The Misfits have the energy to qualify as punk, that's sure. However, their melodies are too much of a mix between garage rock and punk sensiblity that I can only consider them inspiration to the punk movement. This rings true with the Ramones too. I mean, Black Flag came out in '76. Definitely far more representative of punk than the Ramones or the Misfits. Yet, the Misfits were formed in '77, and sound more garage rock.
Three chord playing is just a 'typical stereotype'. I can insist though that every Misfits song with Danzig is no more than say 5 excluding Astro Zombies, Hybrid moments and MAYBE Halloween (which is perhaps 6). It's all subjective, and I wasn't being arsey, I just love the Misfits and I think they are punk. I think the Ramones are punk, as well as the Clash, AFI, Amen or Sublime Just they all cover different sub-genres. I'll happily agree their is garage rock influence. I must admit Black Flag do fuckin' rock though, one of my first loves in the genre. All in all, everyone hears different things. It's no biggie. BUT, AFI are really that good, if you have heard Black Sails In The Sunset and think it's bad, shame on you
And I forgot to mention Blues in 12 bar, that influenced earlier rock bands which influenced metal thereafter. I don't think it was a direct thing. Around the 80's someone decided to start playing in a minor key instead I think everything is relative in music though. Influence can be drawn from pretty much anywhere, and a genre's roots are never easy to truly define.
I don't really like Black Flag much =P They are just the first true punk band in my opinion. Black Sails in the Sunset has good music. Poor overall composition, but really really great elements that remind me of much better bands like Jane's Addiction and Porno for Pyros. I'd still rather stab my ears out than ever hear it again. Bad vocals are bad.
The vocals are great! Davey Havok has always been a 'love him, hate him' sort of singer though. But personally I felt he was strongest around that era. I will admit he composition near the end trails off, but that's because they had a massive line up change before that album (Jade Puget) entered the band, and changed the sound more or less. Either way, most longtime AFI would probably try and choke you if you told them that in person And I love Black Flag, good job for the heads up to 'em. All in all it's quite funny how everyone likes different things. I love a bit of everything, and I have really tried to like both Jane's Addiction an PFP- and I hate them both. Perry Farrell in my opinion has a dreadful voice Satellite Party are alright though. Again, he is just love him or hate him I suppose.
I'm not a big Jane's Addiction fan. Love the guitar, but overall the songs just aren't interesting enough, and his voice annoys me in many of them. However, Porno For Pyros is one of the best bands ever - when it doesn't sound like Jane's Addiction - and very disappointing when it does. I get bored of repetition easily, and love things that are unique - Porno for Pyros has multiple songs that I've never heard anything like. It is weird how different people like different things - because of how similar so many of those different things and people are. I don't understand how his voice could bother you and not AFI's lead. I really want to stab my ears out when I hear shit that whiny - or that indie twinge that's been so popular this decade. But you'd probably feel the opposite about them two singers.
*shrugs* I suppose I just don't hear the whine in the earlier AFI albums, other than one track. You're the first person to pick up on that They weren't so much then when compared to how they are now, and I have sort of grown up listening to them. I started listening to them when I was 14, i'm in my mid twenties now! So being a fan for so long maybe I am just being defensive of a group I grew up listening to- through the years of teenage angst 'n all that However I do find them unique, much like you do Porno For Pyro's. I will listen to the group again, since I do like a little bit of Satellite Party. May as well not right off Farrell strait away. Just to finish another pointless moan by myself, AFI do go further back. Black Sails was the turning point for them, the make up came out and they started being more goth. However the album before 'Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes' was proper hardcore (with practically no singing whatsoever), and the two albums before that slapstick punk. Plenty to please the masses me thinks, they have to be fair changed a lot since the beginning
I have a habit of swaying threads, so just to put it back on track I still love The Misfits! My favourite Misfits tunes, from both era's Danzig Die, Die, DIe My Darling Astro Zombies I Turned into a Martian and Graves The Haunting Descending Angel Dust to Dust
My favorite Misfits tunes: Danzig: Last Caress Some Kinda Hate Michael Graves: Dig Up Her Bones Lost In Space (only two I like) I do find them unique in that most bands that sound like them have no redeemable qualities to my ears, but they definitely do have some talent. But, I'm not really into that style of music. The punk I grew up listening to was the Offspring (they suck after their first 3 CDs) - I've grown to find both more hardcore stuff, and more poppy stuff to like (Bad Brains and The Vandals are my two favorite punk and they lie on opposite ends of this spectrum, usually) I might go back and listen to some of their older stuff if I find the time. I've found some surprising bands that started out kicking ass (like U2) that I had no clue about
I got to see em back in 2000 with michael graves at...ummm..some bar in wheaton MD.Reicher theater I think.it kicked ass.Granted it was Graves, not Danzig, but it still rocked.Only thing that pissed me off was somebody in the pit grabbed my ponytail & yanked me down,& then the cops picked me up for a hit & run the next day when I was goin to get cigs.didnt get me for dwi tho!!!!
