I remember cricketer Merv Hughes flipping the crowd off in a game as they gave him shit about something.

 

Some guy standing outside the window of the Today show flipped off the camera this morning.

I see it, of course, but I never use it. Even as a young child, it never made any sense to me. It's the hand gesture expressed in words as "fuck you." How is that an insult, dismissal, or expression of anger?

If someone or their behavior disgusts you, why would you be thinking about fucking them, or indicating an eagerness to fuck them? To me, that particular hand gesture has always reflected negatively only on the one displaying it, an indication of stunted emotional development or lack of intelligence. Exhibit A is the video posted immediately above this posting in this thread. The young woman who uses this hand gesture is barely coherent, and she, not the one she directs it to, displays a staggering lack of maturity.

It's the gesture of a small child, whose profanity, like his or her dirty joke non-sequiturs, usually display a lack of understanding about how sex actually works.

It's like a father calling his son a "son of a bitch," As an insult, it makes absolutely no sense. How bright would a woman be if she called her son or daughter a "motherfucker"? That is, unless they actually are fucking, but if they were, wouldn't the son or daughter already know it?

He was always a bit on the tricky side of things when it came to humour.
He always pranked me when he was alive.
Unfortunately for him though cancer got him two days before his 71st birthday back in 2014

 

Funny somebody flipped the bird in today's class when somebody else decided to take a pic of him.
