The moon didn't pass directly through the center of the Earth's shadow, which would be alot bigger than the moon if you could see it. The pictures I took during the total phase of the event were longer exposures which made the moon much brighter than it actually appeared to the naked eye... and the reflected light would be brighter on the side of the moon that was closer to the edge of the earth's shadow.

You’re right it has to do with the composition of the atmosphere

The TV Show Universe Tuesday night on the History channel addressed that very issue. also, on the reflectivity scale our moon is on the low end, there are some moons in the solar system that would appear as bright as the sun during full phase.
