Burke et al (2012) carried out an interesting study in which they examined local rainfall data (which is seen as a key determinant of income levels) in several areas of Africa. It was found that in areas with already high HIV/AIDS infection rates, major drought events often raised the HIV/AIDS rate by as much as 14%. They concluded that the main cause of this increase was a rise in transactional sexual activity by women in response to the economic shock of the drought
