Well, I just cracked open my Heady Topper, but first a brief background on this beer.

Heady Topper is one of the most acclaimed beers in the US if not the entire world. It is made by the brewery known as The Alchemist, which is based out of Vermont and headed up by a guy named John Kimmich. Heady Topper is a double IPA that comes in at 8% ABV. The Alchemist is known for a number of beers, including beers with names such as Focal Banger and The Crusher, though Heady Topper is by far their most popular and sought after beer. It is next to impossible to obtain outside of Vermont as it is distributed to only a select few stores within a limited radius of the brewery, and only within Vermont. The beer is released on a weekly basis to these select few distributors, and people line up, sometimes for hours, just to acquire this beer. If you live outside of Vermont, the only chance you stand of acquiring this beer is through online beer trading groups, or, in my case, you know someone who lives in Vermont who is kind enough to send you some. The latter was the case with me, as our own YouFreeMe was kind enough to send me a can free of charge via mail.

Before cracking this beer open, there was an ongoing dispute in my head as to whether I should do as the can states and drink the beer from the can, or do as I have always done and pour the beer into a glass. I have always found the notion of drinking a quality beer from the can or bottle it comes in to be sacrilegious. However, the makers of this beer state that you should drink it from the can, and it gives their reasoning on the backside of the can, stating that some of the hop resins may have settled to the bottom of the can. After doing some research online, I came across a poll on the BeerAdvocate forums, where an almost equal number of people chose one or the other, with just slightly more choosing to pour it into a glass. This was enough to make me pour the beer into a glass, as I wanted to get not only the flavor of the beer, but the aroma and appearance as well.

I am not sure how fresh the beer is as the canning date is nowhere to be found on the can, though I am assuming it is quite fresh.

So this beer pours with a hazy, virtually cloudy orange color with a decent two-finger head that lasts.

Aroma is surprisingly quite subdued, with elements of a New England style juice bomb. Lots of initial tropical fruit juiciness, including peach and pineapple, as well as some grapefruit and orange zest. In the background there is lots of beautifully dank and herbaceous notes. There is also a faint bready sweetness present. Overall a beautiful combination of sweet, bitter and dank.

Upon the first sip there is just a ton of sweet juicy tropical fruit notes, mostly peach, pineapple and passionfruit, with a nice bite of bitter, zesty grapefruit rind. Very pithy citrus flavors combine with a mild biscuity breadiness and some herbaceous and resinous undertones. Very much a New England style double IPA.

The mouthfeel is what stands out the most with this beer. It is exceptionally soft and smooth, which lends this beer an incredible drinkability. There are some lingering resinous flavors coupled with some very dry, crisp citrus flavors.

Overall this is an outstanding beer, though I am not not quite sure it lives up to the hype it receives, especially in terms of the aroma and flavor. It is still, easily, an A+ beer.

its not hard to get it where i am. it is plain old impossible without a person to mail it to you. i am curious what the craft beer scene is in north jersey now...it was minuscule when i lived there but in the last few years things have changed. unfortunately all the people i still talk to there are happy with whatever is at the local bottle shop

Russian River, the makers of Pliny, do not distribute here, so Pliny is unobtainable here. However, if you could get your hands on some Pliny, I could trade you some Grimm for it.

sure. look up ocean city maryland breweries or evo in salisbury. anything else i wouldnt recomend unless you were looking for a certain style. there are a handful of breweries that only do one style well around here.

Anything from Grimm is top-notch, especially their IPAs. They're almost impossible to get outside of NY.
