*kicks crickets the fuck out* I'm back for another drink! I never made it to my third beer last time, so I started tonight with it. I'll blabber more later, for now... Beer #1: (Alc. 11%) (Troegs - Mad Elf) Smell: Honey and faint cinnamon rise up first, holding hands with wine-like cherry notes. A sweet, bready body to back it up. Possible vanilla notes. Taste: Bread and honey front and center, with tight cherry notes trailing close behind. Hints of cinnamon and clove follow through. Faint suggestions of cocoa waft by in the end. Overall, a well thought out holiday brew. Some wine-like qualities brought on by the cherry notes give a unique twist to the flavor profile. Slightly terse presentation, but really quite enjoyable. And yay! A pic to match!
Oh man... Mad Elf tastes like fucking cough medicine IMO. I cannot stomach that shit at all. There is also a 'Grand Cru' version which is supposedly better, though I have not had that one yet. Anyhow, I have not been posting my beers lately, but at the moment it's this:
That looks smooth and tasty! How long ago did you have Mad Elf? Was it before this batch? Could be that this year is different, which I'm guessing is most likely.
I'm half way done with my second beer, so I better get to reviewing before I have to start my third review before I post my second one! SO... Beer #2: (Alc. 9%) (21st Amendment - Not Your Cup of Tea) Smell: Kinda wonky... um... faint smells all around. Slightly sweet bread off in the distance mingles with... I don't know. Just super faint. Taste: Smoky charcoal walks up first. Slightly sweet bread peeks in from the sides. Dark chocolate notes in the distance are brought softly forward with black tea elements. Overall, it doesn't present the black tea ntoes as strongly as I suspected... which may be a good thing. The smoky flavors are front-forward, but not too strong. A fairly pleasant, if somewhat confusing, taste profile and mouthfeel. And your fitting pic for this brew:
And now for the last review of the night. (I may more to drink, but nothing that requires a new review.) Anyshitfuckerz... Beer #3: (Alc 8.5%) (Orkney - Skull Splitter) Smell: Why does this smell like tequila? Soft, hidden raisins among the over-arching, yet subdued, malty sweetness. Mahogany smoke rides the trip all along. Taste: Subdued raisin wine and figs. Slight smoke in the background hangs out with some cracker notes. Possible coffee notes in the undertow. Overall, pretty nice for something called "skull splitter", lol. It has that raisin taste I'm not too fond of usually, but it's muted enough here to be pleasant. A "clear" mouth feel that continues down the throat. Good shit. And I have yet ANOTHER related pic fer ya assez:
Finally found a bottle of CBS by founders. Personally I found one when it came out but thought it was way overpriced. Then a friend said she tried to buy it and the clerk wouldn' sell it to her because it was only for their loyal customers or some shut like that. So I felt bad and searched for it. No luck in all of nj including the store that had it a week prior. Now I can' wait to try it but I will put it away until the next time I can share with her.
Stopped at Death of the fox brewery on the way home. Way below average place. 2 of the 4 on my flight just tasted like they were made by a new brewer with a Mr. Beer kit. Another was so light that i couldn' point out any flavors specifically. Which is impressive considering it was over 7 abv. The seasonal one tapped out on my 4 oz pour. And the last one was a Scottish ale. That one was decent except for one thing. This place is also a coffee house. So while I am trying to enjoy my beer the smell of French vanilla roast filled the room. If only they had some coffee beers I bet they would be great. Oh yeah and no growlers.
I'm drinking root beer. I was drinknig way too much alcohol. Every night for over a year. Idk if I can ever 'drink in moderation' again. I had to sustain completely starting last week.
