That time was ten years ago, when bin Laden was killed. War needs objectives that are clearly defined, achievable, and worth the cost. The only viable purpose the war served since then is as a gravy train for the military-industrial complex. There was no other mission to accomplish.
Seem to me it was the true definition of insanity, expecting a different outcome from the same actions. I only feel sorry for the Afghan collaborators, they will be hunted down and wiped out. Women will be back to being cattle soon. There was probably far less opium produced under the tally-ban, tho. Nobody has a pot to piss in, but they seem to spend a lot of dough on munitions.
But Lindsey Graham thinks it's awful we're getting out. I think an elegant solution would be to send him over there to deal with the Taliban
Lindsay Graham wouldn't know which end of the gun to point at the Taliban. I've never seen a great list of accomplishments for the years in Afghanistan - I thought at least our oil interests would have slipped in a pipeline or such on the government's dime.
That was clearly stated by Colin Powell when he was a general during the first Iraq invasion, and the lessons he learned about Vietnam. No one listened to him obviously.
You said it, Joe....."have you no shame?"..........he should have added "have you no sense?"......"have you no class?".....
Twenty years was a decent amount of time to figure out whether you wanted to enjoy freedom from Taliban rule or not. They are well-equipped and have years of experience fighting along side the US. It’s totally up to them now, but I have a feeling it will be just like when ISIS took over in Iraq. Iraqi Soldiers dropped all the equipment inherited from the US and hauled ass! What a waste of time.
Billions pissed away, thousands of lives. You cannot change the way people think when they have had hate (uh, religion) pounded into their heads for centuries. Think if we had that much government money spent on Alzheimer's or cancer research......or Covid prevention..
I like how the GOP is trying to blame Biden for the mess THEY created with Afghanistan. There should have been a phased withdrawal that should have been initiated under the previous administration, as far as I’m concerned. And I disagree with those politicians who think that we should stay in Afghanistan indefinitely- and my question to them is “for what, exactly?”
I applaud Biden for standing up and saying this is the right thing to do, in leaving Afghanistan. As I have said elsewhere on the site, this was setup to be a disaster by Kushner and Trump - basically they gave the country back to the Taliban in exchange for us leaving. We do and did need to leave, we were not supposed to be there in the first place. Obama was weak and let the Generals bring in a huge surge, costing many lives and mass destruction. The 'infrastructure' we supposedly enhanced for them during the occupation is another smoke and mirros delusion... where did that Trillion dollars really go??? The entire thought that the US should be the world's policeman and decider of moral standards worldwide is not only wrong, it is simply an extension of colonial thinking generated by the Europeans during the last few centuries. The US was nuts going there in the first place, after the decades of disaster brought to them by the Russians. The US inherited a terrorists playground and thought we could bomb them into peace. I also think following the money trail will lead to some horrible truths being exposed.
The US goes into third world countries and tries to turn them into first world countries without consideration of said country’s culture. You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.
Especially if the “new tricks” aren’t working for “us”. How in the world can we ever be considered a model to the rest of the world? Look at us!
But those REPUBLICANS voted FOR the H-U-G-E tax breaks for the top 1% !!!!! Bought and paid-for corruption. And they call Democrats ELITISTS !!!!!! ??????
Former National Security Advisor John Bolton said publicly that T**** was going to do the same exact thing as Biden is doing - withdrawing troops from Afghanistan quickly. (because it made political points for T**** before the election). So blaming Biden is just TYPICAL REPUBLICAN HYPOCRISY ........................... yet AGAIN. IMO ...... I think Biden and the military leaders / intelligence community are seeing China and Russia pumping out ships, tanks, missiles / hypersonic missiles & systems, anti-missile defenses, new top-of-the-line subs & sub-launched missiles, combined with their strategic global positioning / posturing and verbal saber-rattling ........... and concluding that Afghanistan is nowhere to be tied up right now, especially when our military KNEW that the Afghan military had no spine. (they ran and hid!!) I think they believe U.S. focus should be on the "bigger fish" and a larger stage. Anyone else thinking the same ????
