These, days, there are so many new genres that take from a combination of many old genres. Jazz rock (fusion) is the perfect example. In the late 60s/ear;y 70s, you had bands like Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report, Return to forever, Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis (with Bitches brew) doing totally different, and new things with music. Jazz suddenly mixed with rock, and even psychedelic aspects. Post rock: It is a genre that often combines rock, jazz, space (think Gong) and classical. Throw in some ambient electronic too in some instances. It is a genre that is known for its intensity and slow buildups. I love it! You failed to mention techno too, as well as jam bands like Grateful dead who mix rock, country, folk, blues, space and psychedelic. Folk rock too, is a genre in itself, as big as blues rock or country. If you mention blues and country, you must mention folk!! Indie rock is a sub genre that has spiraled into its own unique genre, with unique subgenres to boot... such as dream pop and shoegazing. Edit: Some hip hop (aka rap) is extremely intelligent: De la soul, Public Enemy, Immortal technique, Grand master flash, etc. But is it mostly old school.
yea it dosent matter what genre to how smart the person is listening to it. Just what you ears like to hear lol but seriously your old and rap is out of your generation so you dont appreciate it. Besides there are plenty of rappers that are more like black poets you just havent heard them because you hear all the radio crap.
Not to stereotype anyone like you have but I figured you'd be older (if 43 is old) as soon as I read the SHIT you wrote about rap and this overall thread. Yes, go ahead and say "Peaceinthestreets is one of those without a clue...". Rap isn't music to YOU my friend, and if rap isn't music what is it? I agree some rap is garbage, but so is some of every type of music. Lil Wayne and most of mainstream is part of this. But that's not all rap. Good rap speaks of important things, not stuff like clothes, money and "hoes". <--- That's probably the rap you heard, if you even bothered to give it a chance. I bet you didn't even hear the words but judged it because it was "loud with a big beat", am I right? It may have been a garbage song but it had the same chances of being something truly good. Rap is a lot more of an "ethnic" genre then anything else, with this being the case what type of music do you think people from Urban neighborhoods would make? I mean not that us ethnic people can't sing but it would be quite hard to speak the same message in a song that is sung because it would take much too long. Rap has a lot more words then other genres because it speaks of stories and real life things brought to you through rhymes. It speaks of hardships and troubles that when spoken of, hit deep within the people that are familiar with them. Rap is a culture, much like any other genre. So before you judge anyone who likes rap, or even listens to it every once in a while an "angry person" find out about the subject you speak of. Ignorance is a crime. Open up your mind, be open to new things and ideas man. I'm 18 and have already learned this lesson. By the time i'm 43 there are things I hope I have already accomplished but nothing as fundamental as this. You speak of people who like rap as "social outcasts" well what do you consider yourself? You went through posting a ridiculously obnoxious rant to a bunch of people you don't even know. You basically just told us that you wouldn't get along with 75% of people because their taste in music says more about them their personality. You sir sure seem like a social outcast. You've gone through talking to everyone on HF like your some type of educated person about music? You don't know shit more then anyone else, especially because you probably have never even givin anything but music that interests you the time of day. And you talk to us like you know what your talking about? Like your opinion holds some importance? I can assure you it doesn't and that you have issues dude. You stereotype southerners as "in breeders" and country music fans as people who can't handle anything but a pretty voice. You need to learn that people have different interests and tastes and that you have no right or business questioning this. What, do you think a person only likes one type of music? Or even better yet do you think an artist of one type of music does not like any others? I assure you there are people who like Classical Rock and Also like rap. Any combination is possible? I like Nas, atmosphere, KRS-1 and a bunch of other rappers but I also like Sublime, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, The Grateful Dead, Bob Marley and a bunch of other artists as well. Does this mean i'm an angry person? You take your labels very seriously don't you? Different Genres of music were not not made for fans to portray whatever image of music they liked, it was made for different styles and different interests. It's not a safe haven for people to hide behind. For example you probably think your a cool dude for Classic Rock. It doesn't work that way, personality can only get you liked dude. I really can't believe I typed all this to a 43 year old guy like yourself. To end this out just because you "claim" Classic Rock does not mean Classic Rock would claim you. You represent the farthest thing from Classic Rock. I bet that any of your favorite bands would basically tell you the same thing I did if you dared say such a stupid thing to them. Your L-A-M-E.
and do what put it into different posts consecutively? I'm sure he can read through that it's not a book. It was meant to him specifically anyway, so don't worry if it's too long for your liking.
No did you learn how to make paragraphs in school? That is only one paragraph, it should be at least 3.
hahaha yes I have. I promise mom. So indenting and having space between paragraphs really matters on HF? Sorry about that then.
Its cool you can write however the fuck you want on free speech, just when it's like that it's a matter of me reading it or not.
It's alright PITS, I was able to read it(would've been nice if it was separated into paragraphs, but no worries, lol ). It was something you felt really strongly about. The same reason why I made my own reply on the 2nd page. Some people just have a tendency to over-categorize everything. To them, rock "should" be this or that, and rap "should" be what-not, and so on so forth. I've actually interacted with a few people regarding this matter when I made a journal about it, and as a matter of fact a few posters from the "older" generations made comments saying they actually try to be open-minded about all forms of music including rap. I thought that was very cool. Anyway, as provocative as this thread is, zillagod still has the right to maintain his views regarding music. They say opinions are like assholes, and that we all have one. It's true. As flawed as zillagod's theory sounds, it's his opinion and he probably won't change it unless he actually wants to. It's just that he has displayed a level of ignorance that essentially offended certain people, which he knew was going to happen anyway. I just know that, from a musician's perspective, young people today seems a little more open-minded about music than they were when I was a kid. Back then it was all about headbangers vs. homies at least where I grew up, lol. Now I have people come up to me and say nice things about my music(rock), and they proceed to tell me their favorite kind of music is hip hop. Times change, people change, but music in itself has always done one thing that has never changed: move people.
all you music snobs really tick me off sometimes.(not all of you on here, just in general-to clarify) music is a form of self expression, like art. just like there are multiple forms of art, all to be interpreted in different ways, so goes music. some of it may not suit your ''ideals'' of what is good. and some of it might be exactly your cup of tea. but all noise can be considered music, technically, when you really think about it. i mean think of the origins of music, itself. i'm sure that it probably all started 1000's of years ago when a caveman or woman grunted and smacked a stick against a cave wall and liked the noise and continued to do it. possibly it wasn't even that complex...and possibly it started long before man ever walked the earth... basically what i am getting at here, is that ALL music is an expression of oneself. it's simply a vessel that is used to communicate a certain feeling to the rest of the world. and no matter what the genre, or whether or not a certain track is up to your ''standards'', i believe all music deserves respect. just as you would respect someone else's property, music is someone else's intellectual property. and certainly, someone's musical preferences are no more indicative of a person's level of intelligence than how a person takes their coffee. to believe otherwise is fairly ignorant.
Nothing more to be said. Thanks Karmalized. I've just read this thread from the start and was thinking about how to add my "2 cents worth" and there you have it in your post.
You can't let the mainstream overshadow the talent of entire genre. Sure there's a lot of stupid rap and country, but there's also a lot of great country and rap. Just like grunge and hair metal 20 years ago, both of them go to the point where it became so generic and straight up bad both genres collapsed on themselves but it doesn't take away from the fact there were also many great and talented bands on each genre. Take classic and jazz too, sure, it seems like it's more intelligent, but you don't think plenty of people who suck at it don't try to make jazz or classical music too? No, we just never hear it because songs of those genres need to good to be enjoyable, a catchy guitar jangle pop song can be utter crap but still catchy enough to like.
You know, no rule is ever absolute. There is always at least one exception, and in many cases, many exceptions to a rule. But so far, what I am reading in some of the replies to my original post, is confirming what I stated.
Yeah I bet. Your an asshole and if the friends you told the same rant to didn't light your ass up like everyone here did their also assholes. It's funny that's all you can say to defend yourself. Your a racist too judging by one of your other posts. Do us all a favor and just keep your your thoughts to yourself, because barely anyone agrees with you. Get with the times dude, even better yet your age. Get on HF to be a cool dude, not to be an asshole. Your 43 dude get a life.
