Certainly not an English thing. Edit: But I am looking forward to it, mostly just to see my family and give them presents. I'm going to get my niece a Lego wii game, mainly because I want to play it. Kids are useful for that kinda stuff.
You just summed up ALL of the holidays, all of which I HATE! ( ok except Halloween ) Everyone is in such a freaking hurry.
I'm not a pagan, I don't do the whole sun-worshiping, Mary-Queen-of-Heaven-satanic-blasphemy-like-stuff. Y'all enjoy your worship. (lol seriously)
there are holidays of some kind almost every month of the year. beliefs, governments and interest groups all have sets of them distributed throughout the year of their own. hollidays are a wonderful thing when they give you an extra day off, of pay you double time and a half for working them. for me they're mostly just another day, unless someone invites me over for dinner or something. however, everyday is a holy day for me too, so don't feel like i'm missing out on anything either. i spend them doing the things i enjoy doing. i actually prefer the calm and quiet. and lack of political and religious arguments. i think the solstices and equanoxes are cool for what they are, without the need for attatching other names to them. and its a relief not to have anyone to have to holiday shop for either. a good meal i didn't have to cook for myself is nice once in a while though. and hugs. hugs are always good.
I want to know who has been telling you our national secrets? We share our maple syrup, allow others to make poutine and beaver tails that are knock offs......but our beer and hockey are national treasures.
I get too excited about Christmas. I'm like a child... it's only 36 days to go! I hate the commercial side of it, but everything else I love. Except Santa... I have a phobia of Santa.
i hate the holidays. i think its a bunch of bullshit. i hate children. they're dumber than their parents... luckily i made it out alive.
I had a brisk, vigourous 4-5 hour walk by myself last Christmas. I intend to keep the "tradition" alive this year. Edit: I miss Brooklyn. There were so many Chinese and Muslim store owners, I could still buy the things I needed when I needed them. Of course, hoods would start throwing eggs and shooting their guns up in the air at midnight, which was a little unnerving. But, all in all, it felt great.
I took my nephew to this park in my neighborhood. They used to light this castle every year for Christmas but after 9/11 they didn't do it anymore. They rebuilt it and made it really beautiful. Finally they decided to do an annual tree-lighting, and there was fake snow (lol it was foam). He was kind of overwhelmed but he really liked when Santa came in on a firetruck. Haha, he actually doesn't even know who Santa is yet. I don't know whether that's a bad thing considering his mother doesn't make an effort to teach him anything or take him anywhere fun. But the whole thing made him happy, and it made me think even more how I want to do things like this with my own children someday.
