Now in the fifties and early sixes the only available music in a car was from the old AM radio. The hot set up was when you had TWO speakers one in the front...and one in the back, with a front/back/both switch under the dash. No stereo. If you had a reverb unit mounted beside the switch...you were smoking! Here's a demo of what a reverb sounded like. This guy also has a light bar, they came out in the middle sixties. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89gXIJcu9fg"]Custom 62 Cadillac Radio by HCAT - YouTube LOL. Reverbs were cool. They worked off of a long spring inside the box that must have delayed the signal. You could tune it for more or less echo effect. If you went flying down the highway the spring would bounce around and smack the inside of the unit!
So in 1964 we have a mix of motown, surf music, pop, folk, 50's rock, and the British invasion. 1964 was an amazing year for music. We all know the Beatles made their U.S. debut so we'll skip them. At the time they were a boy band anyway. Look at the videos from the time, most fans are 13 year old girls. While the music was good, the Blues were back, thanks to the British.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpXPcnKWztU"]I'm Mad Again - The Animals - YouTube

And I could go on... But let's finish 1964 with a few "newbies" that later pretty much caught on with the folks. These guys first appeared in 1964 as a quartette made up of Ray Thomas, Michael Pinder, Denny Laine, Graeme Edge, and Clint Warwick. John Lodge was around but had gone off to college. So now we are coming to 1965 and I must stop here and talk about the Four Track tape system. In 1955 Chrysler offered a turntable in its high end cars, but they never caught on. So we soldiered on with our AM radios until 1962 and the introduction of the 4 track car player. Four tracks were used extensively for commercials in the radio business starting in 1959. In 1962 "Mad Man" Earl Muntz came up with a unit that would work in a car. Here's video which explains how it works. At the end of the video you can hear some of Fijid Pink's version of The House of the Rising Sun. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoKzivUJ3nY"]Muntz 4 track cartridge player, rare 1960's tape format, Kingstereo 4 track cartridge - YouTube Four tracks, and later the 8 track, led directly to the psychedelic era as they are based on pseudoscience and witchcraft. Note in the example 4 track cartridge below that the tape unwinds from the center of the reel, passes a roller at the back. Travels up to the front where it passes over the heads in the unit. The hole in the front bottom left is for the pinch roller which snaps up from inside the unit to trap and move the tape back to the OUTSIDE of the reel. Obviously the laws of physics dictate that you can't remove tape from the center and wind it up onto the outside as the center is a null point and the outside part of the reel must have some dimension. Which means that eventually the tape is going to break, which it always did. Then you had to open the case, untangle the mess, and re-splice the tape back together by applying a piece of Scotch brand tape to the back and carefully cutting off the excess. Usually you lost a note or two in the process. This lead us all to start taking drugs out of desperation and frustration. Later on a guy named Lear (yes he also invented the Lear Jet) gave us the 8 track which had poorer quality sound, but held more music. They still broke and good old Lear removed the screws that held the case together and used plastic pins which needed to be pried apart with a knife or screwdriver leading to loss of blood and more drug taking. Above is a picture of my Top O The Line Muntz 4 and 8 track unit from 1969. I payed big bucks for that sucker. It was a cross over unit when we were switching from 4 to 8 tracks. I still have it as I was going to install it in my Hemi Cuda as sooon as I could afford one..but that don't look like its gonna happen. Plus I got it out the other day and found out the drive belt had rotted to death. But now we had our own music on the go whenever we wanted it!
