Awesome! Now I know others are like me, with a waiting list to wade through.

    Great suggestions all!

Sometimes I wish I read faster, but I like to absorb the words and savor them, not rush by.

You are not alone, I haven’t had the opportunity to read as much as I have in the past, but I often read a couple different books at a time, with plenty waiting on the shelves, yard sales and second hand stores are great places to find gently used reading material

I get most of my books at yard sales, flea markets, and used book stores unless I'm looking for a particular author.

Well summertime is over, back to reading more indoors...I suppose.

Has anyone read "The Sex Lives of Cannibals?" It's hilarious and has no cannibals...

At the age of twenty-six, Maarten Troost—who had been pushing the snooze button on the alarm clock of life by racking up useless graduate degrees and muddling through a series of temp jobs—decided to pack up his flip-flops and move to Tarawa, a remote South Pacific island in the Republic of Kiribati. He was restless and lacked direction, and the idea of dropping everything and moving to the ends of the earth was irresistibly romantic. He should have known better.

The Sex Lives of Cannibals tells the hilarious story of what happens when Troost discovers that Tarawa is not the island paradise he dreamed of. Falling into one amusing misadventure after another, Troost struggles through relentless, stifling heat, a variety of deadly bacteria, polluted seas, toxic fish—all in a country where the only music to be heard for miles around is “La Macarena.” He and his stalwart girlfriend Sylvia spend the next two years battling incompetent government officials, alarmingly large critters, erratic electricity, and a paucity of food options (including the Great Beer Crisis); and contending with a bizarre cast of local characters, including “Half-Dead Fred” and the self-proclaimed Poet Laureate of Tarawa (a British drunkard who’s never written a poem in his life).

With The Sex Lives of Cannibals, Maarten Troost has delivered one of the most original, rip-roaringly funny travelogues in years—one that will leave you thankful for staples of American civilization such as coffee, regular showers, and tabloid news, and that will provide the ultimate vicarious adventure. - Amazon review

Sounds good. I'll check it out when I finish Stephen King's From A Buick 8.

So, how is the book club format working, though? Are people all reading the same book at the same time? How do you coordinate, or do you coordinate at all, how it goes? (A chapter at a time, then discuss, etc)

We tried to do that but this place is filled with independent souls!

We can not all agree on just ONE book to read, so we offer reports instead :)

Not like a traditional book club... but here we are! Anything to get people reading instead of watching TV is my goal!

I just finished The Founding Myth by Andrew Seidel, which was about how Christian nationalism is un-American. It was okay, but I kind of prefer Christopher Hitchens' humorous and sarcastic intellectual style to Seidel's just the facts format when it comes to anti-religion writings. Hitchens was an excellent writer, which made whatever he said interesting. Still, Seidel's book provided some good information.

I started reading a book about philosophy last night. I've never taken a philosophy class and have wanted to learn more about it for quite a while — even if just the basics — but couldn't find the time. Now that I'm retired, I have the time.

I'd be up for reading a book as a member of a group, although I'm not really into fantasy or most science fiction, which seem to be two of the most popular genres of novels. I might give one a shot, though.

I will report on my latest book as soon as it is finished, probably this weekend.

For philosophy, I also have not read much of it but enjoyed this as a starter... I found it in a rental condo when I first arrived in Mexico... I left a sci-fi novel in it's place and kept this one.

Each one of those questions would be a good topic for a philosophical discussion, perhaps in this forum.

As a side note, a question to add to that list: will you become a nuclear power so belligerent nuclear powers don't attack your country?

The answers to most of those important questions would certainly make me a socialist. Interesting questions for humanity to answer. I'd like to see some posters weigh in and I will do so myself.

I would prefer to be a Switzerland type neutral country... and avoid the unnecessary expense and mindset of the 'war' type people.

I should have read this before creating HipForums.
