I'm not sure. I recently heard it done live by a random bassa nova group. sang it in choir in high school too. love it!
There are plenty of versions on YouTube. Astrud Gilberto did the original English version. The original was sung in Portuguese.
Antonio Carlos Jobim. There's tonnnnnsssss of versions in English and Portuguese, I really like the english version on the album A Twist of Jobim.
The first version I ever heard was Herb Alpert's instrumental version I found quite haunting. Herb Alpert - The Girl from Ipanema (Der Boy aus Ipanema) - YouTube
I found this instrumental version by Richard Carpenter Trio - a predecessor to The Carpenters. "]Garota de Ipanema - Richard Carpenter Trio - 1966 - YouTube
Yeah, for a vocal version I like the Antonio Carlos Jobim version best, too. As for instrumental, Archie Shep.
Love Astrud Gilberto version, but lots of other good ones such as Lou Rawls, Frank Sinatra with Jobin.
I'm more of a prog rock chick myself, but hubby loves his jazz. He maintains that Astrud Gilberto's vocal style & Brazilian roots make her version the not only the most instantly recognised but also the benchmark.
