I think sludge is the only thing that's saving metal. Black Elk, Gaza, El Cerdo, Impure Wilhelmina and Zebulon Pike all seem to be doing something a bit different from the rest of the metal scene.

Ha, sludge is just a little part of the bigger stoner/doom genre in which several other subgenres so to speak are doing just as different things. Not that the difference is the only thing that can save metal of course. You can get real retarded bands when they trying to hard to be different.
Anyway, I'm not even sure metal needs to be saved. I still find enjoyable new bands and albums and the bands and genres I don't like somebody else probably enjoys. I don't have a problem with 'bad' metal as long there's good stuff.

I don't know much at all about sludge, but if its what I hear referred to as "beardo metal", it definitely isn't. Hipsters and indie kids need to leave the hall. Of course I could be wrong and beardo metal could be a completely different thing. I think bands like Skeletonwitch are saving metal. Its like a mix of the old school and the new.

I think I just don't like to look at bands as saviours of a particular genre. :p

I think Asmodean's got it right.

As long as bands are still innovating while at the same time not detracting from what real metal is st its core and making good music, metal is good shape. No saving needed.

    I think style is irrelevant.

Metal needs to get back to... quality music.

    Content > form.

Metal is not one thing. Some metal will never appeal to you and other bands will sound like what you like metal to be. I don't think style is irrelevant. It shaped the particular genres. Yes, content as well, but not because it was so good. More because it's so typical hehe.

Ideally, content would be an extension of form (and vice versa). Therein lies the problem. There is only so much you can do with a single idea OR a single aesthetic framework before its impact becomes negligible.

People worry too much about metal's 'core.' What's the big deal? Black Sabbath first several albums will always be there, the same goes for Slayer, Hellhammer, Burzum, Iron Maiden...etc...etc Metal has a huge back catalog of classics, it's time for some new ones! I'm tired of this homage / tribute shit. BULLSHIT. grow some balls and be creative.

Hahaha, Remember 10 years of chugging palm-muted duplets that preceded it?
Maybe the next great metal will be filled with chugging palm-muted quintuplets. Wait I think its already happening..
    chugachugachug, chugachugachug...):p

Fuckin' bonehead metal's all it is....kid stuff.

    You'll grow out of it...
