If you study music history, You discouver that music used to not only entertain but much of it used to represent the general "mood" or "express" the angst of the era and public sentiments. It's one of the reasons that music has always been at the front of social revolutions. (ie: Go on homme you fucking British soldiers.. go on home." or, "5.. 6.. 7.. 8.. Open up those perly gates... I don't give a damn cause next stop is vietnam. Whoopie we're all going to die.") Today because of Internet piracy and gouvernment manipulations to keep the "revolution in check." (How else can you explain the fact we only have Walmart hippies when there are 2 un-popular wars and the financial crises going on.) So the end result is that modern music is "Canned" music. It follows a "safe" plan to ensure profits and that the "stay asleep" message is constantly on the lips of the general public. Visit my friend's forum: http://les-revolutionnaires.org
That's not true anymore. The fat cats obviously deserve next to nothing of what they receive- but people can search out what they like on the internet now (Facebook, Myspace), and it's thanks to such portals the record labels have to take notice. Lady Gaga would have been a record companies nightmare, otherwise. Myspace helped her bring her music out, she found a huge following and they HAD to take notice. I don't like her but she can write a damn catchy pop song- not bad for what to me, seems like the female-coming of Marilyn Manson. If the internet wasn't avaliable she would still be writing for other people, and we would still be seeing some idiot diva singing songs about how sad she is, but not really. There's no money in record sales anymore, because of the internet also. Downloads have ruined the market- touring is where the big bucks are.
Wow, I think saying that all 60's bands wanted to be like The Beatles is such a generalization... Maybe you shoulda listened to more then just 3 bands from the 60's? Also, when it comes to the 60's there far more experiences I think then there is with modern music, because how much music genres today have a sub-culture around it thats solid? Modern music doesn't have the culture of the times in their music either, really... That's because of how broken and fragmented are culture is in America, now. Pink Floyd lyrics The lunatic is on the grass The lunatic is on the grass remembering games and daisy chains and laughs got to keep the loonies on the path The lunatic is in the hall the lunatics are in the hall the paper holds their folded faces to the floor and every day the paper boy brings more And if the dam breaks open many years too soon and if there is no room upon the hill and if your head explodes with dark forebodings too I'll see you on the dark side of the moon The lunatic is in my head The lunatic is in my head you raise the blade, you make the change you rearrange me ' till I'm sane you lock the door and throw away the key there's someone in my head but it's not me And if the cloud bursts, thunder in your ear you shout and no one seems to hear and if the band you're in starts playing different tunes I'll see you on the dark side of the moon Tame Impala Lyrics Please don't get answers from eyes You know that mine can't lie Quite as well as yours Just let the spare moment flow Rounding steps as I go Through the open doors Please don't deflate from a sigh I'd hold still every time but I'd start to shake I wander around for days Wondering what I'll say When they want the truth You will never know how hard I try To keep from waning while waiting at the start The depth of every touch is real as you need But words don't do any favours for me Example of 70's lyrics and hopefully an emerging sound of the 10's

Never said anything to do with talent. I said the labels are forced to follow trends, and not make them. The reason music is terrible is not nearly as label influenced as it used to be. The market it shit because people are following their own trends, point is even if the market was void of money completely, most people like the ordinary- the music played on the radio would still be bad. Have you not noticed that since Gaga, every popular artist is imitating her? That's copying a trend, something the public have bought in to. All the money is in touring, plain and simple. Madonna is a great example of that. One tour, one hundred and fifty million. The internet has changed the whole dynamic. There's a whole array of new issues record companies have to face. Plus the proof is there, so many record companies are struggling, or have disbanded because of a change in climate. It's all just a little more to think about.
because money follows trends... people spend their money on trendy shit. In other words, people generally have shitty taste? If the market was devoid of money you probably wouldn't hear music on the radio for the most part... because there would be no shit bait (dollars) to attract record labels to tell radio stations what we're to be persuaded that we like. Can't really see how this contradicts the position that it's more about money than talent. The big, pathetic herd with shitty taste gravitates toward total shit- paying money to see concerts... downloading music in volume... the trends that labels are forced to follow... because that's their best chance to make money. Granted, you've broken it down pretty well, but in my mind it only tends to support the point you seem to want to disprove.
I'm not overly disagreeing with you it's all but a different side of the same coin. Money pun intended
"Quality" is all in and between the ears of the listener instead of in the music itself. It's just a matter of taste really. Most lyrics are shit without the music,
^^^ha, same here!!! I have had the lyrics written out to 'Do You Realize' on a dry erase board at my house for YEARS!
I recommend listening to BBC Radio 6 Music http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/ for good alternative / indie music (though Marc Riley who's on at the moment is a bit of a twat). Chris Hawkins and Shaun Keaveny are funny, Gideon Coe and Steve Lamacq very knowledgeable. You can listen live online and to past shows. I thought Fish wrote some good lyrics in his time: Torch Song - Marillion Read some Kerouac and it put me on the tracks to burn a little brighter now Something about roman candles fizzing out, shine a little light on me now Found a strange fascination with a liquid fixation, alcohol can thrill me now It's getting late in the game to show any pride or shame I just burn a little brighter now, burn a little brighter now Doctor says my liver looks like leaving with my lover, need another time-out now Like any sort of hero turning down to zero still standing out in any crowd Pulling seventeen with experience and dreams, sweating out a happy hour When you're hiding 29 you know it ain't a crime To burn a little brighter now, burn a little brighter now
I'm sorry, but I have to rant: I hardly listen to the radio nowadays because I don't like listening to most of the songs being played. But: when I was in high school the grown ups didn't like listening to Nirvana; and when they were in high school the grown ups back then thought rock was the devil's music and when those grown ups were in high school... :dizzy2: It's always easy to bitch about "today's music" and yearn for those "good ol' days when they made real music". I'm sick of hearing this. uke: I keep hearing people older than I am talking as if their generation of musicians didn't make their share of crappy songs at all. Hell, I sometimes hear this from my generation. There will always be music that we don't wanna hear (that's gonna be played because other people wanna hear it) and there will always be music that we wanna hear but other people don't wanna hear. In the end, music is just music. It's rhythm and melody, harmony of sound and silence. And there are so many options now. You can listen to jazz, you can listen to pop, you can listen to reggae, you can listen to rock, to just about every kind of music now. stop wasting your time bitching and moaning about how crappy music is nowadays and enjoy what you want to listen to. And finally, let me just say: Sheesh lighten up you guys, it's only music! (and this is coming from a musician who loves music) You either listen to it or you don't. If you don't like what you hear, you either start searching for what you want to hear or you make it yourself. But whether you do or not, the world is not going to end because of a bunch of crappy songs with crappy lyrics and crappy melodies. Phew, end of rant. :sifone:
most of people that bitch and moan about music today, Are not musicians themselves... Play an instrument & Stfu..
