Just inform yourself as much as possible, that's all you can do really. Try and balance your needs in a way that doesn't flow you in to the "wants" the world may be throwing at you every few days, months, years..

This is why the forums really help, ideas have seemed to come your way here.
The home builing advice I have is to contact a natural home builder. Do your research and find out as much as you possibly can before you invest your time and money in to something as big as building a home. I know there's books available online on building straw homes (it's something I'm also interested in, for later in my life)

    Good luck with your endevours!

responsible consumerism is a misunderstanding that arises from the idea that an individual can have a clear conscience within a group that pollute. If your society pollutes you should still feel guilty - responsible consumerism - PAH ! no such thing there are responsible producers and responsible governmnts but s long as the producers churn out harmful crap people will consume it. The onus is on the supplier and manufacturer not the consumer. The consumer must not just refuse to purchase but must actively demand that production of irresponsible lines ceases

You've heard of all those grow-your-own-food programmes implemented in WW2? "We" as a country were at war then and "We" as a group of people that share the same views on capitalism-commercialism spreading across the world are again at war, and yes we have need of those programmes again.
this may be slightly off the point but if we get simple things like growing a little bit of your own vegetables or stating a compost piles (all heavily cliched i know) then its just a little bit less dependance on shops, farmers and ultamatey currency. in the words that every msn woman and child here in the U.K. will have heard over and over again "every little helps" no prizes for any english members who know where that's from.
