I got about 3/4 of the way through it while I was sick but I gave up on the book when I got better. It was interesting at first but I think it dragged on too much, I was bored by it.

Yes well - the 'ice-crean suit man' is in my opinion a third rate hack.
Personally, I can't stand the book.
And it's almost certain that it does give a very skewed picture of events.

I love that book so much. It really gave me a thought process to the whole LSD thing besides getting wasted. I read Change Your Brain around the same time. Leary gets a little far... out...there... sometimes though.

i just started this book 4 days ago and i am about 3/4 of the way through it. this book is a great study of not only a most important character in the hippie movement but also the group dynamics of liveing in a commune and the effect of drugs, both positive and negative, on what seem to me can best be described as a hive mind that drifts in and out of a day-glow forest at night.

It's the definitive delineation point of the segue between the Beat and the hippie movements. That it is skewed, is almost certain. I mean, Tom Wolfe, was then, as he is, now, a dressed-up dandy, and prolly only Kesey, even, partially, trusted him. But, it's dated in that it's a bit sexist, and, more alarmingly, soft on pedophiles. Remember the guy who bragged about having an eleven year old boy in the loft, and the others just laughed in response ? Not cool ! But, remember, we're a generation who thought Chester the Molester was funny in Hustler magazine, too. Well, me anyway, I'm an old fart.

if i remember correctly when he says he has a 11 year old boy in the loft wolfe went on to explain that it was a ongoing inside joke.

i'm not sure i should check that.

I fucking love it too. To understand it you have to open your mind and when you do, it's freaking amazing.

READ THIS BOOK! If you haven't already done so.

It sounds like a lot of us read it when we were 16. I finished it a couple weeks ago and loved it. It's one I'd love to read again sometime :)
