Nixon was never impeached. He was only threatened with impeachment and resigned before the House could vote to impeach, which it was certain to do. Here's the real problem. In the entire 19th century there was only one impeachment (Andrew Johnson) and he was not convicted by the Senate. In the past 23 years there have been 3 impeachments and not one resulted in a president being removed from office by a Senate conviction. Impeachment has become predictable politics by both political parties in Congress as a way of expressing hate/contempt for a president of the other party. It's good for fund raising and keeping the base excited and engaged - and sending in more money to the ambitious demagogues in Congress who love to wave the bloody shirt and have their own eyes on a future presidential campaign of their own.

And your point is? That there should be no way of removing a President from office, regardless of how egregious his conduct.
That it's Congress, or the folks in Congress calling for impeachment and conviction who are the faulty ones, indulging themselves in bloody shirt waving? That it's "all politics", and all parties are equally guilty? That its okay for a President to claim, without a shred of evidence, that an election was rigged, and that Congress should have the power to reject the results of the electoral college votes, and if that doesn't work, the Vice President should, and if he isn't up to the job, the mob should, at the instigation of the President, and nothing should be done, cuz it's "all politics". Pathetic!

AS I said and you also pointed out, there have been four impeachments. None of them had a removal of office as a result...

    So what was your point???

    IMPEACHMENT II: TRY TRY AGAIN!

And we're under way. In the opening statement, Rep. Jamie Raskin, Lead Impeachment Manager, argued that there must be no "January Exception" to the President being held accountable for impeachable offenses, citing the dangerous precedent it could create. He then showed a video of portions of Trump's speech at the Save America Rally, followed by the storming of the Capitol. He said there can be no doubt this is a valid impeachment. pointing out that the framers of the Constitution made it clear any official can be impeached at any time for offenses committed during their time in office.

Okay, we're off to a good start.

The vote on the constitutionality of the trial passed 56 - 44. They only needed a simple majority this time but they'd need 11 more Republican votes to convict him. Highly unlikely, but at least we'll give him some horrible publicity.

Now word is that Trump is furious over the rambling, disorganized presentation made by his defense attorneys. He was screaming at the TV!

What does he expect? He's obviously guilty, will beat the charges anyway, and the best his lawyers can do is minimize the damage to his already damaged reputation! And they're overwhelmed trying to do that!

The trial will proceed with up to 16 hours per side to present their case beginning tomorrow at noon EST. Even without a conviction I can't imagine Trump ever successfully running for any office again, even in the red states. Once this is over with he needs to focus on his other legal challenges, and if he beats them he needs to retire.

Yeah but he won't go to jail for this. If he's convicted in one of his upcoming criminal cases he could face jail time, but will probably tie it up in the courts, and if he runs out of time he might flee the country. Let's face it, prison is for people who can't do that.

Donald Duck is a free man, and considers law abiding citizens losers, who can't afford the best justice that money can buy. For details on the price of justice today, write your congressman and watch the news for any announcements from Biden.

So far today the Dems have presented evidence that Trump was no innocent bystander in the riot, he provoked it months beforehand, all the way up to the election and well past it. He told his supporters the only way he can lose is if it's rigged, then afterward insisting it WAS rigged no matter how many recounts and court challenges he lost. Then when all else failed he told the mob at the Save America rally to "Fight like hell!"

Then during the riot he sat back and watched it on TV, apparently enjoying it, before telling them, after a couple hours, "We love you but please go home".

Yes it's nothing we don't already know, but they're doing a great job presenting this evidence. And yet no matter how one-sided the trial is, as it was yesterday, he still won't be convicted because he still owns the Republican Party. Hopefully the evidence presented will significantly erode his base of support to the point that he loses his grip.

If the republican party thought about it, even if only for a minute. Convicting him would be the best way to break that hold. But they would rather deal with the toxic sludge that is his base just to keep those votes.

    sad...

Yes the Republicans need to put Trump behind them. As his support dissolves people will remember the politicians who refused to stand up to him.

Trump's attorneys used just 3 hours before they concluded their remarks today. Then the Senate moved to the senator Q&A session with the House managers and defense attorneys. The vote over impeachment is now possible as soon as Saturday. Closing arguments will be presented tomorrow for 2 hours for each side, and then possibly the vote on conviction or acquittal. A two-thirds supermajority is required to convict.

The RATS abandoning the same ship of state they are so intent on sinking are never to be confused with taking a stand on anything, other than each other's heads. These assholes would sell their own mother for lower taxes, and will cry all the way to the bank over their poor choices.

As expected he was acquitted, but hopefully the trial has ruined him. It damn well should have, but I'll believe it when his support base dissolves. Anyway I'd say it's time to dump Trump once and for all. I'm sure he'll still be in the news for some time, but for the most part let's put him behind us and move on. It's a new world we're living in, let's make it work!

You cannot attack what you cannot comprehend, and you cannot "Dump Trump", who is merely the leader of the mindless mob!!! He was elected by people who don't trust their own electoral system and government, and whose only agenda is to destroy them. They will never stop attempting to impose a rooster and destroy the constitution.
