When i first got them i didn't know whether it would be painful or not, also i didn't use backcombing, i got them done in mexico by a couple of dudes that sold hemp bracelets and necklaces on the street. i think they used knitting hooks to do my dreads....

    Also, thanx Mabster :D

Hey all... Greets from South Carolina! I am a black/native american albino man, and I started my dreads first in 2002. I wore them until mid 2007, and they were down to the small of my back. Long blonde dreads. I cut them off in 2007, and after a month or so, seriously regretted what I had done. I had cut off 5 years of growth! I started them again in october of 2007, and they are coming along nicely now. They are about 8 inches long, and of course, golden blonde. I rea;ize that this is THE hairstyle (and lifestyle) that I will keep until the day I leave this world.

One love, one heart, light up the darkness!

this may seem like a stupid question, but how else do you start your dreads other than backcombing? when i was looking to get mine done, all i saw was backcomb backcomb backcomb. but now that i've got them done, which they were backcombed, and it took about six hours or so, all i see is people talking about the 'natural' way to do them. please, someone enlighten me.

natural was the only way i knew when i started mine... simply stop combing and they happen pain free

natural really is the only way to dread backcombing only makes u think you got imediate results, but then natural has to take over to really dread

theres millio9ns of sites pushing backcombing and all because hey want to sell products,m kits which is hard to do if peoiple know the truth that all they gotta do is nothing at all and dreads will happen

good deal. yeah i've got some good core knots, but since i've taken all the elastics out, there's a whole lotta loose hairs floating around everywhere. what shall i wash them with? to keep the knots i've got from coming apart of course. and how often? about once a week?

weekly is good and since u backcombed they tend to fall out anyway before they actualy lockk up
so dont worry about the loose hairs oor unraveling
over time they'll do what they do and become real dreads
use a non residue soap likle dr bronners or the baking soda deep cleanse
other then that just seperate now and then so they dont congo outta control

hey everyone, i've been lurking here for a few weeks and figured i should introduce myself and start contributing. my name is phil, i'm 21 and am living in northwest CT at the moment. i'm originally from milwaukee WI but since i graduated highschool i've kinda lived all over the country and am still getting used to living in 1 place for an extended period of time, although a great girlfriend makes it easier.

now, about my dreadlings. i'm about 1.5 months into my journey. i back combed to begin with and now am just kinda letting it do its thing. i'll usually palm roll for a bit after i wash it as it helps it dry and seems to help tighten them a lil. luckily i found this and a couple other websites that warned me on the danger of waxing so i dodged that bullet.

ok, well thats a little bit about me and i hope i can contribute to this great forum and hope to get to know a few of ya....

it kinda amazes me that youd (or anyoner for that matter) had to find a site warning about wax beiung bad...its wax...what about wax makes u think its good to put in hair? sure a few sites do a ton of advertising tmake you think you need it...but if u just think about it a momment does it make any sence at all?
ive seen some sites that say use peanut butter and axel grease..but i'd hope the average person would at least question the logic of that

but dreadheadhq and knottyboy are briliant scammers
theyre biggest producty they sell, is themselves as dread authorities (even though nobody that i know of has ever seen anyone on theyre staff with dreads)
even the names of the 2 companies are geared towards establishing a trust in them as the authorities on all things knotty and dready
everry 15 year old in hs whos ever mentioned wanting dreads is directed by dreadless (or sticky dreaded) peers to visit those sites and the lies just snowball
theyre affiliate programs caused thousands and thousands of dread sites to list theyre products as nesacary no matter what methods used (even saying to use wax if you choose to go neglect)
all these thousands of pages push all truthfull websites right out of sight literaly flooding the web with lies just so they can scam..and harm, as many peopke as possible who dont take a momment to think...does it make sence to goop wax in my hair?

Yeah, wax is bad m'kay some people will also tell you that they just use a little bit, even a little bit will do damage

Wax doesn't even do anything, it just gives the apearance for a short while that it does, then you put a little bit more to keep the tidyness up when in fact your just sticking the hairs together stopping it from dreading.

If you want tidy dreads, use a crochet hook and pull them flyaway suckers in

as soaringeagle said, nobody at knottyboy or DDHQ has dreads, it's all a money making scam, they have no respect for you or your hair, they just want your money

Hi all, I thought I'd poke my head out of lurkerdom to introduce myself (and my hair) :D

My name is Nicky, I'm 35 and I'm a hedge monkey from Lincolnshire UK. I've had my dreadlings now for just over 7 weeks and already they're loopy, curly, crazy and dreading up a treat. I backcombed them in loosely thinking that my baby-fine hair would be the last hair on the planet to dread by itself. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. In fact, I couldn't have been more wrong if i tried! It seems that every time I wash my hair (2-3 days) the little darlings wrap themselves up just that bit more. The process is really quite visible (and facinating). All the thin wispy undreaded ends are looping back on themselves and, as a good friend of mine pointed out, half of them look like little curly seahorses on my head! :)
They're just being left now to do their lovely thing. No fiddling, faffing or fannying about with them. After all, why would anyone in their right mind want to palm roll little curly seahorses out of their hair? Makes no sense to me.

    Peace and love folks!

thanks for the tip mr. eagle. with dreads like yours, i would imagine you know what you're talking about. i'm not going for the neat look anyways, more like the caveman look. i was getting a bit worried about the hair though, cause mine is pretty loose right now, but i reckon that means it's working. i've got a few, mainly the ones in the back and a couple on the side, that are sticking together quite nicely and tightening up, but the bigger ones are more like clumps of hair, not real dreads, yet. i'll keep you posted on how they're going. as for the sea salt spray, just squirt it in all your hair and rinse with water? i'll try it next time i wash em, after the shampooing part.

I'll try and get some pics of the little luvs up soon. Who'd a thought having such unruly hair could be so... liberating. I don't miss the daily faffle with the curling irons one bit. Actually I've given the buggers away. To someone with neat and tidy hair. Which I don't have anymore. YAY!
