Get them out right away, you don't need them :) AT ALL !!! they cause hair breakage and don't allow your hair to slip and slide and tangle it's just holds them in place

take all the elastics out now.

the only beneficial thing they do is separate the locks for you (which is pretty friggen easy to do). they break hairs, impede the locking progress and you are best to take them out.

good deal peoples. thanks for the tips, i'm pullin em out in 29 minutes when i get off work. as far as palm rolling, that's about all i do to help the process out. wash about once a week. no wax. does this all sound good? and the itchy scalp/dandruff problem, i've read in here about tea tree oil, aloe, a couple other herbal products. some seem to cause dread rot though. what is your best way of solving this problem?

lock rot? nothing should be rotting in your locks when you rinse it out. in my experience palm rolling didnt do much. if you're skeptical too, why not stop for 2 weeks and see if things change?

i won't roll em anymore. i only did it once or twice week, and only to the ones that are still pretty loose. most of em have good core knots, but there's a few that feel like they're gonna just come apart at any time. patience is the key to success though i believe. i'll keep you posted. got a couple pics up now though. let me know what you think

    Hi there and good evening.

I'm Mabs, I'm 21 and live in The beautiful Shetland Isles.
I work for a conservation charity as an Arborist and A Gardener but do sooo much more =]

My dread were born last week in a frenzy of back combing from a friend, my fiancee and my mother ever did one or two!!
Much waxing was carried out by my friend but I shall go wax free now!! I washed them last night and dang it made a heck of a difference.
My dreads are about 5 inches long.. some fat, very fat and some thinner...
I have re done three of them myself and they feel tight already, solid little kids.

Wax free shall be the way for me :)
They are currently elastic banded though... Also too tighly at the roots so I shall take them out.

I shall get pics up soon and shall keep you all updated on my journey.

    Peace

    x

It was one of the first things I read...
I had read some info on the net about how bad wax was etc... I was naive.. but I feel it..
Its odd having that sensation in my hair...
No wonder people think dreads are messy in this modern age!

Thank you Soaringeagle.. Your posts, mind set, philosophy are fantastic.

arborists ..treeplanters tree care someone who works with treees (but not a lumberjack who slaughters trees)

    and to the other dude
dreads should not be a painful experience
the pain invoilved is the biggest reason i disagree with the whole backcombing thing..well the pain and the dammage to hair
dreading should be pleasurable and so easy it happens without you even noticing
    it seems very masochistic
if there was a pain free way to get tattoos most would opt for the pain free way except masachists
if your getting teeth drilled or going in for surgery do you refuse anesthetia?
then why would u endure hours of having your hair pulled if you had a pain freee alternative
thats something i will never understand

i have a high pain tolerance and very strong hair, when i was young my uncle loved to grab a handful and lift me off the ground by my hair (it didnt bother me at all)
but even though i could handle it probly better then most, i still couldnt ever imagine intentionaly sitting there hour after hour having my hair pulled and yanked out at the roots..
    thats torture..
dreading should be a blissfull experience not tainted with torture
i especialy think its odd that sop many choose the torture as theyre 1st option withjout even trying the painless way 1st
    whats that say about society?

Abortionist!!! O Dear.. now that would be a terrible job..

So aye, as soaring eagle says I care for trees.
We grow them from locally sourced seed, grow them, nurture them then plant them out iin community woodland and schools.

I also undertake pruning operation both from the ground and up in the trees, feeling wind blow, dangerous trees or get arty farty and shape the best I can (in a natural sense.. Im very careful with what I remove.

    Love your dreads DH420
