    haha well thank you :)
    i guess i'm kinda tomboyish..
    a tomboy in long skirts
but i'm pretty rough and tumble
    lol

well thank you very much for your opinion!
your's is the first one i've gotten..
haven't really talked to much people about getting dreads, as i don't have many people to talk to on a day to day basis anyways..

    hello snoopy!
happy to be aquainted with you!

i see you live in detroit!
i must let you know... i am absolutely obsessed with michigan
and i mean.. OBSESSED. to the point where i got a fairly large michigan quarter tattooed on my upper rib cage..
where abouts in detroit do you live?
have you ever been to... dammit.. why can't i remember this right now (took a darvocet for my teeth and feeling a bit loopy.. lol)
you know the project.. where this dude decorated all of these houses on this block with all of this "garbage" like one has stuffed animals nailed all over it, and another one has like this UFO thing on the roof
and in the back yard of one of them there's a crap-ton of old vaccuum cleaners with gloves on the handles so it looks like robot hands coming out of the ground..
but it's really fucking cool looking
    super creative
i'm kicking myself in the ass for not remembering what it's called

hahaha, its funny that you're obsessed with detroit
I'm obsessed with LEAVING lol I'm moving to arizona in a couple of weeks. And I'm familiar with what you're talking about but I've never seen it personally. It's been an extremely long day and my brain isn't being my friend, or else I'd know the name of it too!!
But I live in southwest detroit, about 10 minutes outside of the downtown area. Pleased to make your acquaintance.

    well not even just detroit..
    like michigan in general..
i would love to move to upstate and live in the woods next to a substantial sized lake
    arizona?! why?!

well if you're into weird trippy stuff..
i'd definitely recommend you go see it before you leave michigan
it is a sight to behold!
one of my FAVORITE things i saw while i was there
would love to drop some doses and walk around that are of those houses.. would make for an interesting experience.

anyways, how long does it usually take for dreads to start locking up?
is it better for me just to let them form naturally?
or should i section them and backcomb them?
or is it really just a matter of personal preference?

how do i get BEADS to stay in?
cause that's a huge thing for me.. i will HAVE to have beads in my dreads for sure..

haha, well i live NEXT to a nicely sized forest now
There's no lake that I know of, but when it rains I always see frogs...interesting...

ANYWAY, i'm moving to Arizona to help a few friends start a business
and to get away from the snow, i largely dislike snow
winter is a wonderful season, if not for the damned snow lol

but as far as the dread questions, I'm pretty new to it myself, almost two weeks young actually, but I can answer from what I know and have picked up from here.

The hair dreads more or less when it feels like it, everyone's experience is different. for some it may take a month or two, others it make take a year. the crowd here is pretty diverse as far as the natural-backcomb-other methods crowd. whatever you choose to do, do NOT use any wax. I'd say you could start natural now if you felt like it and as your hair gets longer you can decide whether to keep going natural or backcomb what you've already started. Beads, I have no idea, but I want a few in my hair at some point in time as well. I think there's a thread around here about beads already you could check out.

well it's good to hear you live near some nature
i think it's a shame when people isolate themselves right smack dab in the middle of a city, they have no trees in their yard, and they're so close to their neighbor's house they could piss on it from out of the window..

i haven't really seen too much snow.. so it's something i'm trying to be around. but i definitely can understand not wanting to be around it any longer.. i have a couple friends in michigan who are absolutely sick of it, haha.

yeah, i definitely need to find somewhere that gives me some answers about beads.. cause there's no way in hell i'm doing my dreads without some good beads in there! they're a must.

backcombing to me seems like it'd make my dreads shorter than if i let it go naturally..
but that's just me, maybe i'm wrong..
i'm still a little bit clueless
    haha

yeah i like going to Jackson and Chelsea
very green places, lots of land, beautiful sights
maybe a few too many deer though

but yeah, look around, ask questions. Everyone's relatively friendly here and they love exerting their opinions lol

leaver your hair would look amazing dreaded

ya do have that adorability thing goin for ya too so even through the shirt messy crazy stages you'll just float on through on pure adorability
i really think ya should start now it seems odvios to me that yoiur hair wants to start wether u do or not..
give it what it wants and it'll dread nicely
mine was 1/2 your length when i started now theyre past my toes
let em do theyre thing and they'll love ya for it and bless ya
i cant wait to see ya in 6 months or a year

    edit to add
beads are easy to comer by
make yourself a peyote stitch or 2 for color
then tgo to a junk yard, search through all he cars for 1 with 1 of those beaded massage seat cover things
    sorta like this
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/WOOD...mZ190251454779QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting
but wouldnt blow 25 on it id look for a junk car with 1 and ya can probly get it for a buck (or just snip a few strings and leave with a pocket full of beads)
find 1 of them and y got a couple hundred beads free
old rings work too as long as theyres nothi9ng to catch onhair
or u coiuld do like the gutterpunk thing and use old nuts and washers and such

u can hollow out bones use brass or sny other metal tibes glass (unless your clumsyt like me) or wood you find can be made into a bead

you can make fimop clay beads pretty easily too

point is you dont gotta go out and buy "dread beads" when u can just be creatinve and use some stiff u either make yourself or just find lying atound

    oh yeah yeah
i know i don't have to specially buy dread beads..
    in fact..
i have beads coming out of my ass, i have so many..
i'm referring to actually putting them in..
i'm assuming i wait untill my dreads actually form?
and then get ones with a big enough hole to slide on..?

    Hi!
    i'm Maryellen, I'm a soon-to-be newbie dready.
I was referred over here from a dready mama on another forum.
Just wanted to introduce myself and say I've been reading this forum for almost a week now and have found some great insight.
I've decided to go au natural; with the help of sectioning, backcombing and rubber bands.
So thank you so much for this awesome forum and the great people on it spreading the ideas of there being alternatives to everything. :)
I really look forward to hanging out and sharing pics and such after my head gets all knotty.
    Thanks again!

    well hello, and welcome :cheers2:
if you have any pictures of your hair before you started the process you should contribute to the hair prior to dreads thread

    Hails!

I'm Olly and I'm 17 years old. My dreads are about 7 weeks old now, and coming along rather nicely if I do say so myself!
I live in north-west England in a town called Warrington. It's not bad, but I've lived in better places.
I've played the drums for about 7 years or so now, and it's my passion in life alongside music.
That's the basics about me! Just took a couple of photos to show the dreads... comments on how they're going please? Cheers! :D ps, do excuse the loose hair at the back, lolol. I'm working on that one!

    Thanks! :)

Aye, 7 weeks! Yeah, they're backcombed. Just noticed it looks like there's motor oil or something in my hair... it's just the camera flash/lamp in my room, haha.
