Thanks a lot for your advise, you do have a realy nice set btw, and you say there completely natural? as I said from what I had read on the company websites nice dreads couldn't be attained that way, obviously not the case, but yeah, thanks a lot and I probably am going to back comb once and then let them do there thing, another question though, is I have seen a few people now that have dreads but they have closer to 4 inches of natural hair at the root, I really don't want to end up with locks like that. how is that avoided?

If your hair is straight, it might be a bit difficult to lock up the roots, if you've got curly/textured hair it will kinda take care of itself.
You can backcomb right up to the root. Also u could grab the dread and just clockwise rub the root on your head, could help. There's always, however, gonna be some amount of hair undreaded at the root. 4inches is a lot though. I've got maybe like 1inch normal roots...
    Irie!

I have to say I am really tempted to dread up completely naturally, however I dont understand how you don't disturb them when you wash your hair etc. also theres no guarantee of them being roughly the same size is there? time isn't an issue I know I will appreciate them more the more time it takes, however I don't want to risk not having a nice set. what soaring eagle said about back combing once, what would I do with the tips if I do that? also yes my hair is straight but as I said earlier it likes to get knotted up anyway, so I can't see there being an issue with the roots, I just needed to know that if I don't do anything to the roots they wont grow looking different to the rest of the dread? especially if I have back combed, but to be honest the all natural way is becoming more and more appealing the more I read up on others experiences,

mine were backcombed, waxed, twisted, and just left. when i washed them after the first week they got really loose, but as they dried they got tighter.. everytime i washed them they loosened, but then they tightened when they were dry

if you backcomb, you can govern the size of them i suppose,, ive never done the natural route.

i left my tips, i had wispy hair at my tips and i didnt care.. playing with them would, i presume, help to knot them up

i left the roots as well, they did their own thang =]

the roots take care of themselves what u probably saw thiough was dread extensions or something that left the 4 unches of undreaded hair at the roots
ive seen people put in fake dread extensions then probly conditioned theyre ghair too much so it didnt dread
as fir not disturbing it when washing, just concentrate on washing the scalp not the hair..just rince the soap thru the hair.
dont worry too much any disturbance will cause knots too just dont run your fingers through it which will unknot it

same thing happened to me, they get tight really quick, some of my thinner ones are almost solid, but lots of loose hair around the section lines at the start. As for the tips, I tried rounding some and leaving the majority alone, there actually starting to do the same thing, rounded are loosening a little and the free ones are tightening, cant really tell the difference between them now.

    good luck africanherbsman1990

    and awesome dreads soaringeagle.

So I have naturally curly hair, which ALWAYS looked its best when I kept it clean and residue free
    [IMG]

But it has ALWAYS wanted to dread on its own. When I was in highschool at one point when I was deep into my Anarcho phase I didn't do anything to it for quite some time and it started to turn into basically three or four very large dreads and my parents had me wash it and comb it all out.

I'm 21 now, and my hair is shorter and thinner than it was when I was 18, from continually brushing it out (even with some really nice conditioners whilst wet). So I decided I might as well let it do what it wants to do.

Although I LOVE the neglect look, i really did want something nicer looking so I made a "test dread" from only backcombing it and using a little bit of this mango and lime locking gel that washes right out.

My little buddy there I had for two weeks before I did the rest of my hair and hes this perfect looking little monster, but FOR SOME REASON I decided to do the whole waxing thing and I totally regret it.

After about a week or so I spent three hours washing it all out and messing with my hair, and sadly a couple of my dreadies are little three inch stubs. :(

But regardless they have been there for three weeks now, and for two of those weeks they have been natural and residue free and its like ive been lifted.

I don't know why I did that, especially since I already knew my hair not only did it on its own, but does it VERY fast.

I really do miss my curls because I loved them to death, but there was so much unhealthy things I had to do to it JUST to PREVENT it from dreading...

But I also love my dreads. ;)

Sorry I don't have a better picture, but I just moved and haven't brought my digital camera here yet.

i always wonder why ppl would do insane crap to theyre hair to get dreads when dreads will just happen
and i can only assume its addicyion to havingto do things to the hair to get what u want from it you saidd u hadto brush a tun and use alottas cinditioners to prevent dreads so naturaly your used to doing things to get results so when u wanted dreads you felt the need tpo use products and put effort into making them
the result, uoiu nearly ruined them
when jusyt sitting basck doing nothing foir 2 weeks woulds resulkted in dreads to envy

but glad u found us now

keep on the right path and you'll have rockin dreads

so its been 1 month and 4 days since a brush has touched my head, and beides a little pointless palm rolling i havent applied any techniques to speed up the process, going au natural baby :D , and i have this forum and Eagle to thank!!! much appreciated, some how your almost histerical opposition to popular dreading techniques has impacted on my soul and my moral fibers lol

anyway here is the progress, dreads are so hard to capture in photos but i did what i could

awesome progress theyre comming along great and umm when u say popylar dreading techniques what you really mean is popularized
before certain sites started sellimng lies noone ever heard of all these techniques. maybe a few ppl here and there were performing them but wasnt widespread like today
id guessthat 80% of dreads over maybe 12 years are natural
possibly palm rolling was the earliest technigue
im sure during the 80's though a few stumbled on backcombing just trying to tease up all that big hair crap maybe wax may have come right oytta the liberty spike with jello or glue thing who knows
but these popular technoiques today are only popularized throiugh thiusands owf websites mostly propegated by those 2 scam companies and scam salons
