As Paul said, that's rubbish. He is on the record attacking Saddam in Parliament. He took issue with the method and motive of the 2003 war. You can be against Saddam's regime and against the war fought to remove him, there's no discrepancy there whatsoever.
I come here to listen to free speach and peace loving hippies refer to anyone who disagrees with them as "stupid little cunts" and bragg about how entertained they were when a 79 year old man and his 14 year old grandson were killed by a bomb. That's entertainment. That's great. It's just that when it comes time to doing anything about Saddam or Milosovic, Benn finds some excuse to object and heads for the exit. He's a useless posturing old fool.
You're welcome to disagree. It's the sneering contempt you show towards others who disagree with you in turn that I find objectionable. Not to mention that your delusions regarding Thatcher betray a heart unburdened by compassion, which is a thing I always find distasteful Wind 'em up and watch 'em run. Shall we talk about the Grand Hotel at Brighton next? Thatcher killed far more people than any bomb ever did. It wasn't such a dramatic end though, so they weren't accorded ceremonies of state to mourn them.
You utterly miss the point. Benn refused to accept that fighting a war which would cause so much innocent suffering was the best way to act in that situation. And there was precedent for his scepticism - the massive scale of innocent suffering caused by the 1991 war. Refusing to accept that military action as proposed was the best way forward is neither "posturing" nor "heading for the exit". It rather shows real engagement with the difficulty of the issue. Saddam caused minimal suffering in Iraq over the past decade compared to that inflicted by the West. The war fought in our name added insult to injury. Seeking to find better ways to resolve the situation and refusing to accept the easy and convenient route is courageous and difficult. Benn is a great man.
It seems to me that pro-Thatcherites have an extremely simplistic view of life... something that roughly equates to "rich is good, poor is bad"... the idea of free-market theory is approached like some kind of text from God, and applied with religious fervour across the board... even in situations where it is non-sensical and damn fucking idiotic... as long as the economy booms and GDP rises, the pro-Thatcherites ignore the signs an symptoms of social unrest because it fails to fit into their theories... why should people be unhappy?... we are a rich country with booming properity and yadda yadda yadda... I'm not going to claim to be an economic theorist and waffle on about the supposed economic miracle of the Thatcher years... but just look at the mess that has been created out of the housing market as an example of misguided free-market philosophy that succeeds in backfiring with increasingly catastrphic consequences... But I will fight concerning many of the social injustices that were created during her reign... in particular, I am prepared to demolish the complete hatchet job that she did on the country's education system... something that New Labour is still struggling to get to grips with (mainly because Blair lacks the balls to take on the significant problems inherant in our education system)... It is time that politicians stopped hiding behind the all too readily accepted popular myth that has been created around Thatcher and looked at the reality of was was done during her time and are prepared to undue the damage that was created... Fly... .
