I'm not affected by gruesome images much either. Nature is cruel, killing for food happens in the animal world; I'm hardly squeamish and if I had to survive or defend a loved one I would do whatever it took ...

However, in the society that we live in, we DO have a choice.

:( hmmmmm..... first off, im aware that goats are still being farmed for our ends but thats a choice i have made. i know myself well enough and know my body well enough right now to know that if i made the decision to be vegan it would be detremental to my health. judge that and me as you will.......
as for the 'buddhism and vegetarianism' passage you put up i never actually saw many references to buddhism contained within it. i must say it has offended me slightly that you would choose to put up a certain passage without previously getting full knowledge of my beliefs etc. i have assumed this was put up for my notice but if of course it wasn't them do accept my appologisees. we have to allow people to have their own choices, we can't make people do things that we want......

While you do actually raise some good points with which I agree, attacking non-vegans or non-vegetarians for being selfish is always going to be hypocritical - that is, unless you live an entirely perfect life half way up a mountain somewhere? Is every single thing you buy ethically sourced? Have you ever ridden in a vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine? Do you wear clothes made of cotton? Do you buy anything made of plastic? We all sacrifice our principles on a daily basis for the sake of a life of convenience. It's just a matter of where each of us draws the line. Nobody's pure in this world - and that includes you.

There may be some circumstances where your survival will depend on an animal product (medical stuff etc.)... but that is more because of society removing your choice rather than the individual being able to choose any different.
I think that says so much really. Before I stopped eating meat I always battled with disciplining myself to do it.

It took me ages to become ready to make the change. I didn't want to think of myself as a hypocrite, I wanted to be healthy and I didn't want to be a victim to the social conditioning that had allowed me to believe that there were health benefits to meat eating.

Believe me, I've made all the excuses myself, and at one time I've even had the same attitude of your brother "Its natural to eat meat so who gives a shit how they die - dead is dead" ... I'm not doing what I do now because I'm some softy who cares about fluffy bunnies because they look cute.

I'm not perfect, I'm doing a bit at a time ... my plan is to eventually cut out all animal products, but I'm not going to pressure myself too much just yet, seeing as its only been a few months and I'm scared of failing completely if I try.

However I still won't condemn anyone else for being a victim to the lifestyle that we have grown up with. It took me long enough to become commited enough.

That's an incredibly simplistic view, Claire. Death is inherent in virtually everything we consume and use. Just because the link's more obvious in the meat and dairy industry, it doesn't mean it doesn't exist anywhere else. Do you drive? Then you're sacrificing animals for the sake of convenience. Cars kill animals, in case you hadn't noticed. I'm not saying that vegetarianism and veganism aren't worthy goals (as a veggie myself!), but it's a bit rich for anyone to claim that meat-eaters are the only ones making sacrifices for the sake of convenience.
