Legend tells that back in the 17th Century 3 English Sailors snatched a Native American baby out of his mother’s hands and threw him in the Saco River in Maine, to see if Indian babies were natural swimmers. The Mother jumped into the river to save her baby but they both drowned. Her husband a wise and powerful Indian Chief is said to have put a curse on the river which foretells how every year, 3 white people will drown in the River. After a recent wave of drownings here in Massachusetts where 9 people of all different races have died, I was wondering which Indian chief did we offend?
Perhaps …lol…but my guess is Chief Massasoit; The Great and Grand Sachem (for whom our state is named after) for our self-indulgence, debauchery, and decadence.
My dad had land along the river. I used to swim there as a kid. I knew of the curse but never believed in it. Had a lot of great parties along the river too.
i thought all babies were natural swimmers? it wasn't that long ago that infant swim lessons consisted of throwing a baby into the water and letting it fend for itself.
I wonder what my indian name would be, and no I don't want a name generator I want to be White Wolf. or. White Eagle. or. maybe they'd call me Great White Irm. I already have my dinosaur name, lickalottapuss
I canoed down the river years ago during a 5 day outing at Summer Camp, but had no fear since the curse is color specific
Don't remember since I was 13 years old at the time, which would make it almost 30 years ago to the day
