Mort Sahl had a hilarious joke in the 1950s, when everyone else was scared to attack Joe McCarthy, etc., (even before Murrow's hatchet job on NBC, etc).. "There's 170 million people in America, and I'm afraid to say a membership of 4,000 members of the Communist Party... 3,000 of whom are FBI agents" Of course, his signature joke was: "Every time the Russians put an American in jail, WE put an American in jail to show the Russians they couldn't get away with it" -- to me, the greatest joke ever.
