ok, I have read the bible up and down, even sideways. I have cross referenced secular history with the history in the bible and it all lays out perfectly. It tells us why we are here, the best way to live our live and to have a happy life. It warns of certain pitfalls to avoid. Also warns of false worship and how to avoid it. Also, to never take another human beings thought on a subject but always approach Jehovah in prayer, laying out your thoughts and concerns. Whatever you ask on in faith you shall recieve in this lifetime and the everlasting lifetime that is explained in the bible. Have faith, live life, have fun.. what do you think?
In my opinion the bible is no more than a man made book of the childs game "telephone". It's a book of stories that were told over and over through generations. Facts probably got changed or exaggerated. By the time they were written down a lot of it is probably fiction. I don't need a book of someone else's stories to tell me how to live my life and be a good person. I can figure that out on my own. I don't go to church. I don't believe that Jesus died for my sins. I don't follow the bible. I don't think any "good Christian" follows it 100% either. I think every religious person picks and chooses which part of the bible they choose to follow. There is some crazy shit written in that book. Not something I want to live my life by. I was raised and taught how to be a good person by example. I know how to treat others well. Do right by my family. Help others in need. I don't need a book of stories to tell me how to do that.
I've tried many times. I have a handful of bibles laying around my house and somehow my house hasn't burnt to the ground yet. I've never been able to get into it. Not my kind of book I guess. I've read certain parts that others have asked me to read. I'm not saying there aren't legit lessons to be learned from it. I'm just saying that its not a "how to live your life" book for me.
I don't know how you can say the Bible is true. There are parts of it that are obviously false, like the story of Adam and Eve, for example. At least maybe you can understand why it's hard for some people to believe in the truth of some of the Bible stories.
Thanks for the info. I never noticed that before. I only look at the "Choose File" and "Upload" buttons.
I agree that the story of Adam and Eve isn't factual, but I still think it's true. It's an allegory, like the Greek myths. In the third century, Origen, one of the early church theologians, pointed out the absurdity of taking the account literally. But he argued that it conveyed basic truths about the human condition. I agree. It talks about two people in Paradise who can't get their mind off the forbidden fruit and lose everything as a resultl. How typically human! I owe my Christian faith to Genesis 1:26 which says that God created humans in His likeness. Does this mean that I believe literally that man was specially created on the sixth day? No, I think the evidence is overwhelming that Darwin was right about how we got here. But since I read that passage in a new light, I haven't been able to look at another human being without seeing God's reflection. Some bible readers have noticed that Gen. 1 seems to provide a different account than Gen.2. Gen1. says plants were created on the third day, and humans on the sixth. Gen. 2 says that humans were created before plants and herbs (2:4,7) Gen. 1 says that all animals were created before humans, but Gen.2 says they were created after humans to provide companionship. Gen. 1 has humans created at the same time, but Gen.2 has Adam being created first and woman later out of his rib. And God is much more anthropomorphic in Gen 2.,enjoying His walks in the Garden of Eden, working with dirt, etc. These accounts seem to have been written at different times. I think both have important things to say. Gen. 1 seems to be pointedly challenging Babylonian creation myths. Instead of Marduk's struggles with Tiamet, we have Yahweh Elohim uttering a series of commands and bringing it all into being. Entities like vegetation, the sun, the moon and the stars which other religions regarded as deities are depicted as mere creations of Yahweh. Gen.1, probably written during the Babylonian captivity, is majestic, awe inspiring, Cecil B. DeMille; Gen. 2 is more intimate. The passage in which God forms man out of the dust of the ground and breathed His own life-giving breath into his new creation shows a tenderness that is, to me, especially moving. Likewise, we have in the Four Gospels four different perspectives on Jesus. In Mark, we have the Suffering Servant of Second Isaiah; in Matthew, the new Moses; in Luke, a prophet in the tradition of the other prophets of Israel, only far greater; in John, the Logos, existing before the creation of the universe. I think all of these accounts are fundamentally true, although they contradict each other in various factual details.
I agree is not easy to get into. A lot of the translations make it harder to read than it should. I believe there is no way nobody is going to read a book if it is not readable. But there are Bibles out there that do read right. At least they read more like a book so you can get into the stories and see the characters. it really isnt a how to live your life book. It is more of a puzzle that no one wants to take the time to figure out. There are so many things said about the bible that it makes it hard to even want to pick it up. but it is our pre concieved notions that stop us.
if the bible is true, than im going to hell for sure. whos with me? me and satan will be good friends i think
