Hopefully we can finally get rid of our monarchy and become a perfect democracy with an elected head of state

54% of people in Britain are not interested in the Platinum Jubilee. That’s according to a YouGov poll commissioned by Republic earlier this week.

The poll showed 54% were ‘not very’ (29%) or ‘not at all’ (25%) interested in the event, with just 11% 'very interested'.

A majority were not interested in all nations and regions, with Scotland showing the least interest.

There was also a majority not interested in the Jubilee in all age groups except the over-65s.

The findings come despite widespread favourable coverage of the Jubilee over the past few weeks.

The royals have clearly failed to inspire much interest in the jubilee, despite the enthusiastic support of large sections of the media. Rather than being a national celebration, the jubilee is a minority interest. The lack of interest across the country and all age groups under 65 shows the monarchy's future is in serious doubt.

This shouldn't come as a surprise, particularly at the moment while so many are struggling to put food on the table or to pay their energy bills. But this public indifference to the royals goes beyond current crises, this is a long-term crisis of legitimacy for the monarchy.

We already know from a recent poll that support for the monarchy has fallen sharply over the past ten years, from 75% to 60%, while support for abolition has jumped to more than 1 in 4.

The Queen is by far the most popular royal. If this is the public response to a celebration of her reign, then the monarchy will be in serious trouble when Charles ascends to the throne.

They represent a class system I just don’t agree with, once the queen passes I think things will be different, I can’t see Prince George ever being king, they will be finished by then. Having said that it doesn’t mean I don’t respect the queen, 70 years of not having her own life, just royal duty’s. Don’t know where these numbers came from of people of the uk, no one asked me anything !

Didn't ask me either but I wholeheartedly concur with the result of that survey, yes I want an end not only to the monarchy per se, but an end to all aristocracy and the House of Lords, to be replaced by a directly elected second chamber and to replace the monarchy, a directly elected President, thereby bringing our currently imperfect democracy into a better situation.

I really don't get your beef with the Monarchy and your solution to replace them with a structure of alternative individuals and civil service bodies Vlad.
You don't support the duly elected Government - so do you really think a ''directly elected second chamber and to replace the monarchy, a directly elected President" would solve the Country's woes?
The Monarchy is a visable source of accountabilty, through the publicity of media and unwillingness to go through the Courts to challenge those whom would do them wrong.
MPs, Lords, ministerial and governing bodies often hide the misdeeds of individuals - and commit all sorts of misdemeanors ... form/and/within the shadows

And the monarchy are squeaky clean ??? - not bloody likely !!! and if I happen not to like a President, at least I can use vote to vote against him/her.

When did you have an opportunity to vote for Mrs Windsor and let me know when they distribute ballots fopr Charles the turd.

I did not say - the monarchy were squeaky clean
My point was, - to replace one system of recognised individuals with another level of people - and - the civil service staffing was questionable.
and as for "using your vote to vote against him/her president" - well, that didn't seem to have worked for you with Boris, does it?
As for an opportunity to vote for the monarch. - We obviously haven' had one, - though Mrs Windsor would indeed have got my vote.
This being said if we are going back to 1066, that French bloke would not have got my vote (bloody foreigner).

If you let me an opinion as a total foreigner, I'd say that I see the English Monarchy nowadays as a tourist attraction and material to fill magazines mainly. A few years ago we were with my wife visiting London, obviously we went to Buckingham Palace, witnessed the Royal Guard changing , etc. The number of tourists who were there every day was astonishing.
I saw it as a parade for tourist attraction mainly. I guess that must leave money going into the government's pockets. That always comes good and amuses tourists. A win win situation (like you English speakers say)

Personally I think the monarchy on the whole is good for the country . They attract tourists and boosts the country's economy. A lot of our old history revolves around the monarchy and is again one of the attractions of the UK . Where I kind of go towards Vlads way of thinking ,surrounds the monarchy "klingons" who in my view dont serve any valid purpose but still get funds from the state to fund their lavish lifestyle instead of earning it .

    Ahhh - as I strongly suspected - a 'Littlle Englander' !!!

But then your argument falls flat on its face in the fact that the present 'house of windsor' are actually German by descent !!!

Being as Brighton was established by the Prince Regent, I assume the "House of Brighton" by decent are all Gay Croats?

((Vlad education time - again I see you have gone off-topic with personal and slieght deviation from the question))
FYI - I am Celt descent
    I have no argument, I said"questionable"
The 1066 was a sarcastic aside
    - and though born ourselves in one particular land that we (well some of us) chose to stay in - all have roots from afar

Interesting you say that, as some of your earlier postings stated you had Eastern European roots and background - (maybe you were mistaken??)

By the way british should be spelt with a capital 'B'
(You should capitalise the names of countries, nationalities, and languages because they are proper nouns)
Where did you go to school?
