I was doing a google search on The Singing Detective and came a across this article that rang true with me. It seems to me that BBC1 in particular as well as the whole of the BBC has become far more populist. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2011/nov/17/bbc-singing-detective-potter-managers BTW see The Singing Detective if you ever get the chance. It is a classic piece of TV.The first time I saw it, I was left speechless.
Not a huge fan of the BBC but i did enjoy The Thick Of It, The Fast Show and Red Dwarf back in the day. things just aint what they were....
I rather like the BBC myself - I tune into shows on there more than I do Channel 4 these days. I watched that 'Peaky Blinders' recently and thought it was great! Also: Have I Got News For You Never Mind The Buzzcocks QI Later With Jools Holland Mock The Week Horizon Match of the Day In fact I don't think I could name ya that many shows on any other channel! I know there's a bit of a theme there in the comedy panel show type of thing. But that article doesn't hit on those shows at all. It's certainly not all soaps and period dramas.
I have been watching The Ascent of Man on DVD. First broadcast in 1973 , it is a prime example of programming that is a thing of the past. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ascent_of_Man
That article does mention David Attenborough and he's still free to put whatever he wants up on the beeb! A lot of his funding no doubt comes from DVD sales but they still get terrestrial airings. And that's another point really... Evolution of TV. You can pause, rewind, skip, watch later on iplayer. It's a whole new ball game they're playing in, minus all the funds other channels get from adverts... So many adverts.
QI and Match of the Day, the only 2 program's i can think of now worth watching. Red Dwarf and Only fools (not everyones taste) are 2 i watch on demand. Like bokonon i couldnt think of any from other channels so i suppose its a little better than the rest but still not really a fan
It seems they did air it in the end: http://www.broadcastnow.co.uk/ratings/singing-detective-arrests-300k/5037421.article I can kind of see her point, but, for e.g, what else did the BBC produce that was on a par with that series in 1986? What about 1985 or 1987? Is she not just picking out what was good from, perhaps, 365 days that were no better or worse than today? The BBC does have it's fingers in a lot more pies these days... More stations and talent spotting etc http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p010j8y5 http://www.bbc.co.uk/commissioning/...1/2013-bbc-drama-commissioning-showreel.shtml
"The BBC does not make programmes like they once did." One of the things that made the BBC responsible for it's content production was the lack of alternatives. Since the multiple avenues of social media have exploded on the scene, then the competitive market sees £/$ verses Good Drama verses popularity. The result being = Value for Money taking less of a front, and more of back seat in the drive for viewers/figures. So I guess it's a question of available Quantity against viable Quality (Maybe a "justifiable" (???) reason why some 'quality' programmes get repeated so much?)
Just heard a couple days ago 'Peaky Blinders' is coming back for a second series! This mightn't be the best thread to relay the news but it is good news!
totally agree! BBC doesn't report real news either… lots of repeats, especially during any festive seasons… it's like… dare i say it?… brainwashing…
Yeah I really miss changing rooms its all lost its intelligence now its just fodder for the weak of mind
wasnt fingermouse a kids programme, it used to have a bald headed hippy on didnt it, youre showing youre age fingermouse!
I'm not age, I'm 25. Fingermouse was the real shit before the BBC became all about profits and promoting the new world aliens agenda
over here in the US (at least in my home)- -its the BBC news & it used to be-- absolutely fabulous - - -
BBC news is in a toothless sorry state. They no longer employ enough correspondents worldwide. Their best reporters have also been poached over to higher paying channels like Al-Jazeera. As a consequence their news is basically yesterday's internet news and whatever 'official press releases' they've been given by the government. I don't trust them at all anymore. :/
There was a time when the BBC were sticklers for balance and factual accuracy. These days they are more concerned with PR. Sad but true.
Many people have told me that the whole US media is one big propaganda machine, but what about Alternet or the Huffington Post?
QI is one of my favourite programs of all time! I often listen to it in bed before I go to sleep, I find it really relaxing.
