Is actually 1200 miles... but who's counting? This morning at 2:45 AM the winner crossed the finish line here in La Paz, Baja California Sur. The race began in Ensenada in Baja California (norte). Mostly off road through the desert (on prepared trails or dirt roads) this roaring cavalcade of 300 + motorcycles, ATVs, Dune Buggys, Trucks and Cars will all be arriving here over the next couple of days.
And here is the winning team, led by Mark Samuels. Rider Mark Samuels leading the 1x team in the Pro Moto Unlimited class is the first to cross the finish line in La Paz of the 54th edition of the Baja 1000, performing an unofficial time of 23 hours and 46 minutes, to get the motorcycle overalls for the sixth time. The so-called "king of the 1000" led the SLR Honda team joining forces with experienced riders Justin Morgan, Kendall Norman and Brandon Prieto from Ensenada who drove the last leg of the race to the finish in the South Californian capital.
And here it is now almost 1 PM Friday and I've been on the castle roof peering through the trees at the Transpeninsular Highway a block away. The teams are still roaring into town, and some have helicopters filming their arrival at the finish line. Very noisy, the walls are shaking at times! Dogs barking, chickens crowing... lots of fun for everyone Of course the cops are out there 'escorting' the famous teams into town with sirens blaring and motorcycle parades. Such a big deal! Many, many years ago, there used to be a road race - Paris - Vladivostock now that would have an excellent rally to participate in.
