I don't know how well it would work out covering a glass bong in clay and then firing it in a kiln... I got my bong fired and glazed, just have to fire it again. Unfortunately i'm on christmas break now and last I checked, my bong was in the kiln but my teacher was waiting for more people to finish so she could put more in there so I won't get it back until sometime early January. fuckin stoooooked.
I would love to make a pipe out of clay still but nobody seems to have a spare kiln laying around... I think im just going to buy a piece.
Unglazed clay pipes used to be very common. They are among the most common items from the 1600 - 1800's found by archaeologists. Mind you, none of their users are still alive, if that tells you anything ;-). My guess is that the most harmful substance inhaled by smoking them is the smoke, not anything from the clay, as long as it's fired first. Why not try firing them? I'd be curious to see the result. Remember the old "yello bole" ceramic pipe bowls from the 60's or 70's? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smoking_pipe_(tobacco)#Clay If I may jump in with a slightly-related question, does anybody else out there make wooden pipes? I've made a batch out of various woods using nickel or steel thimbles for bowls with steel mesh for the screen. Some people say they can taste woodsmoke, but I think that's a case of too much flame, not enough herbs. Would anyone here use one? I make my own screen using tea strainers. It's very important that it is stainless steel. I avoid plumbing supply parts; they contain copper, brass or aluminum.
I once made a pipe of wood with a metal socket for the bowl. Never tasted wood. That was the first thing that got me caught with weed though =\
yeah you can make them, yes they work.. At my school it was hard to make them because our teacher was an old headie himself. He pretty much knew if it was an art project or if you had other intentions. In which if he didn't think it was for the good of the class he would though it out and say nice try, "what do you think this is the 60's" I would just laugh and act like I didn't know what he was talking about as far as if it's healthy or not? I don't know I have one my dad made when he was in high school so it's over thirty some years old. He just now let me have it, because I had such a desire to own it. At any rate 30 years of constant smoke and rigorous cleaning and it's still working fine and every one is still alive.
I Just like using foil, I take about 5-6" piece wrap a few times around a permanent marker, bend one end up at a 90degree angle now you have a CHEAP disposable pipe
