The Antichrist can very well be a state of mind or ideas that prevents us from reaching prosperity. This state of mind will be praised and be seen as the savior to us all, only to lead us to disaster. Many people will be oblivious to it except those that can distinguish the good from the bad. Between what Jesus taught and what Jesus taught against. With that said, the Antichrist can be commercialism, a disconnect from the transpersonal realm of the human condition (for the sake of remaining 'grounded in reality'), and hierarchical systems. At least that's how I see it.

I've wrestled with the whole Armageddon thing years ago, as a teenager, and came to terms back then with the fact that for me, God is not that kind of a God. He is filled with unconditional love. But this is beyond man's comprehension. I also learned many years ago that an institution needs to be able to grow and expand in order to be viable and sustainable, this requires very strong reasons to become a member, and a significant means of controlling its members, to retain them and induce them to bring in new members. There has to be an ethical standard of 'do this, or else these terrible consequences will occur.' The religious institution needs to have a climactic final end point to achieve these means. You can find it in all religious institutions, but it is hard to find, if not impossible, in the older non-institutional spiritualities. In such cases there is no reason to prosyletize, and therefore no concept of this terrible end where only the elite, or especially devout members will survive. If we look at Native American belief systems, it is harder to find such final concepts in the more noninstitutional spiritualities of nomadic tribes. But the further south you go, where planter societies have formed more of an institutional society such as the Pueblos or the Aztec or Mayan city-states, then you start to see a development of this final times develop. The Mayan calendar with it's final date for this world of 2012 is a planter-based cyclical concept. But people seem to forget that it is cyclical, so when midnight on that final day occurs in 2012, the day will switch to Day 1 of all the next cycles. In Japan, the indigenous religion of Shinto does not have a final climactic point. But it is not a true religion in the institutional sense. It is an animistic spiritual belief system that imitated the institutional aspect of Buddhism which came later to Japan from China. But if you are born Japanese, you are born Shinto, there is no reason to worry about leaving the belief, because there really are no institutional rules or reasons to be excommunicated, or kicked out or to leave----you're Japanese and so you are shinto, that's all there is to it. There is no reason to prosyletize because, if you are not born Japanese, than you aren't born Shinto---you can certainly study and practice it, and call yourself Shinto, but there is really no way to count you as a member or nonmember, so that is up to you as a non-Japanese. Buddhism on the other hand was an institution, and it has an end point. Many centuries ago, Japanese Buddhist holy men were predicting that the Buddhist end times were near. Shortly after, political turmoil ensued and Japan went through a rough time. It was declared as the end of the world. In the end it was a period of religious, political and societal transition and evolution. But Japan survived it. I have never heard a Japanese Buddhist deny that this ancient period was not the Buddhist end times. From that standpoint, and from the historical context of the Bible and the period that followed (such as the entires about Nero), I don't fret over that. That's why I was not surprised when they dug up evidence that the original 'evil' number may not have even been 666.
