I was telling my fiance about our Thanksgiving.

The perception is changing, but it's really traumatic!

We didn't live in harmony with indigenous America - at all!

My fiance is not from America, and so I told her we have a holiday. She will immigrate, and to allow her personal context, love, and commitment to her future as a civillian/citizen of the world; and later this country, I explained.

Thanksgiving is changing! Teachers will tell you... their curriculum is upside down! In the last few years (perhaps the last 20 - admittedly, not paying close attention...) the way we talk about indigenous culture has sharpened. And we realize - ****. We stole the whole freakin' thing!

Well, the good news is tribal nations forgive us... They get it - we were more advanced, we came, and we thought we'd enlighten them.

Does that make it right, and is it excusable?

We'll see. Maybe not, but there's no turning back - and I think they know that. So we acknowledge them, though not as well as perhaps we should.

Indigenous people day follows Thanksgiving - mark your calendar...

EDIT! i'm totally wrong! Indigenous People's Day is not in November. At all! :D

It's actually Native American Heritage Day - similar, but different. Noted below...

    Carry on! ;)

This is the article I shared with my fiance: The Way American Kids Are Learning About the 'First Thanksgiving' Is Changing

It mentions Aberham Lincoln, so I told her he was a lawyer (if memory serves he was! so was Obama...) and showed her this depiction:

The reason? Lincoln was the one to make Thanksgiving official in the United States of America.

    Oh!

    My bad... :grimacing:

The Friday following Thanksgiving Day of each year is Native American Heritage Day. In 2020, the holiday falls on Nov. 27.

That is not the same thing... both important, but you're totally right - I have my holidays mishmashed...

    :worried:

    I think you're right.

This one is the day after Thanksgiving - not Indigenous Peoples but Native American Heritage day.
