So, Tesco has decided that grocery shopping has a dress code beyond "cover your bits."

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8484116.stm

I'm delighted/surprised to see that this wasn't in the states, what with The People WalMart.

I'd be tempted to arrive wearing roller skates.
    "Footwear" is so vague.

I wonder if barefoot sandals, the sole-less sort, not zero-drop, would fly under radar.

I once got asked to leave Asda (UK branch of Walmart) for taking a photo of a fish on my phone. It was a 10p trout.

Maybe Tesco don't want to risk a lawsuit if someone steps on broken glass?

I rarely use supermarkets. On the very rare occasion I have used Tesco, only for cigarettes or a lottery ticket, I have never had a problem - I'm in and out so quick nobody notices! Sainsbury's is about the most barefoot tolerant.

i thought tesco was a gas station. and i also thought calling cigarettes "fags" had stopped happening 70 years ago.

as i type this, i realize texaco is probably what is confusing me about the nature of tesco's business.

on topic: the dress code is probably a reaction to one asshole customer going off on the manager about someone's pajamas. it's not unusual for a business owner to make a knee jerk reaction to one ridiculous complaint. especially if it comes from a regular customer or a prominent community member or something.

That's actually old news (article dates from 2010). However Tesco staff have long been stalwart shoe police. I've been thrown out of two of their stores for being barefoot. I avoid them if I possibly can.

I've had one over-zealous security guy give me hassle but this was as I was leaving the store anyway. Generally you can get in and out unnoticed, especially in the bigger stores. I've even had a staff member saying 'where's your feet?' on one day where I had to wear shoes for a work thing.

Had absolutely no bother in Iceland, Aldi, Morrisons.

However, in Nottingham, we have two big shopping centres, both run by Intu. I've always been able to go in there barefoot, but they escorted some geezer from the centre recently :

There are professionals who go around checking prices t help their employers set their prices keenly - if the supermarket suspects you're one that would be the reason

Nah it was just some jobsworth being an ass hat. Shelf of shame price reduced items are unlikely to be of concern to compare the meerkat dot com.

    Gave me a laugh anyway.

On the one hand, I do appreciate the position of the shopping centres, since they wish to avoid personal claims for injury. However, those wearing flip flops, for example, are still permitted to enter and meander freely without question. Although flip flops may protect the soles, do they really provide the feet with full security from injury?

I've been barefoot in both the shopping centres in Nottingham several times and never had a problem, in fact I'll be going to both next week.

Been told off a couple of times in the nearest Tesco for being barefoot, I wear flip flops if I go in there now. Their petrol station don't seem to mind though, or the small Tesco Local stores.

I think it depends very much on which store and who's on duty. As far as I know there's no general prohibition - it's up to individual store managers. Shopped yesterday at Lea Valley Tesco with no problem, though I was ready with my "I'll go to Sainsbury's then" response if I'd been challenged.

Went in the large Asda store in Mansfield yesterday without any problems. My feet were seen by several members of staff but I wasn't asked to leave or put shoes on, a good thing because my shoes were 15 miles away.

    The tiled floor felt lovely.

"To avoid causing offence or embarrassment to others we ask that our customers are appropriately dressed when visiting our store (footwear must be worn at all times and no nightwear is permitted)."

Translation: The old retired people who shop here complain about it like they complain about everything else that has changed in society. They have nothing to do with their time but write letters to our corporate office and badger the store manager on duty. So for our sake you will put some proper 1950's dress on.

Good lord people, get over yourselves and stop acting as if it's some nefarious plot to persecute you.
Put on some fucking shoes if you visit such places.
Fuck's sake, with so much else of actual import going on in the world you folks are going to whine because a PRIVATE BUSINESS exercises their rights as such.
grow the fuck up and act like an adult who can navigate the society we live in without so much fucking whining and complaining over meaningless bullshit.

someone comes into my store and drops an 8lb sledgehammer on their bare feet, oh well too bad, so sad.

    again;
FUCKING GROW UP AND ACT LIKE AN ADULT!!!!!!
