Ok right on...I just heard from some joe blows that she had a living will. Still, no matter what starving and dehydrating her to death is inhumane and we don't even do it to heinous criminals! can't we all agree with that? I don't care if it seems that the part of her brain *that we know of* that controls pain is dead. we don't know for sure and should therefor assume it does hurt her to dehydrate to death...wouldn't you want someone to do that for you?????

If she had a living will, there would be no legal controversy.

She only has a brain stem left. It is highly unlikely that she is able to eat. If she IS able to eat or drink, I think she would have woken up to do so by now.

She didn't have a living will. It would have been found in the past 15 years if she did. If one was found, now, I would suspect foul play.

What is really sad, is that her "husband" wouldn't allow her parents in the room as she died. If I die before my parents, I certainly want them in there.

Its true we only have her husbands word for it but im tempted to believe him. I guess everyones been asking each other what they'd want over the past couple of week. Ive yet to have anyone say they'd want to be like that for 15 years.

It is a bit out of order her brother not letting her parents in but I guess the tension there must be something else. I just think its a shame that the whole affair has been played out infront of the whole world. With her husband and her parents at each other. You'd have though that with the entire western world deciding that we know whats best we'd have had the decency to leave them alone for the last few days. Ive no idea how she wanted to go but I dont imagine it was anything like the way its gone down.

Micheal Sciavo is an asshole. The fact that they STARVED this woman to death is horriffic. If her parents were willing to take care of her and get her the therapy (That Michael stopped/denied years back) she needs, what's the problem? Too late now, but this is terrible what they did to that poor woman, and I hope her bastard husband does not get one wink of sleep at night.

mike schiavo did not refuse her parents entry into her room as she died. they had not been there since easter sunday. there is a court order that prevents her family & her husband from being in the same room. i am not sure if it was initiated by the family or mike. her brother WAS in the room, about 15 minutes before she passed, and he got violent when the cops told him to leave while the nurses did an evaluation (of terry). mike had nothing to do with it. this morning, the brother was on the news, at terry's services, saying how evil mike is and that he's satan. so i can see how mike wouldn't want to be in the same room with her brother.

her family would have kept her alive forever, even cutting off her limbs if she developed diabetes - a distinct possibility.

such a huge difference to the pope's death - so many people have said that he showed us how to die with grace. he could probably still be alive today if he would have gone back to the hospital, but he CHOSE TO DIE. if it's ok for the pope, why is terry going to purgatory? one of the many reasons her family had for keeping her alive was her catholisism - right?

and NO she couldn't eat on her own, hospice goals are to ease pain not inflict it for the 'convenience' of the staff. and no amount of therapy would ever replace her BRAIN - which was gone except for the hindbrain.

i'm glad she's finally at rest. 15 years? c'mon people, really think about it - do YOU want that for YOU?

yeah smokey, i agree but this topic isn't gonna just go away in a couple of days - i haven't posted on this before cuz i'm pretty over hearing about it, i live in florida and this has been a topic of conversation for 10 years...

i think i may actually start a NEW thread - one i'd like everyone to help me with. i'm going to type a living will for florida, each state has different requirements so we'll need one from each state. then those that wish to can get one filled out.

That is a good Idea!! I am drawn on this issue. I dont think they should have put the tube in, just to remove it later. Either put it in and leave it or dont!

The Pope's entire system was shutting down naturally; he wasn't dehydrated to death.

The need for externally supplied nutrition and hydration certainly is. The method of delivery is secondary. The point is that the Pope did not violate his teaching that people should not be deliberately starved or dehydrated to death.

So if your respiratory system is damaged and you need artificial methods of breathing does the same apply? What if its the heart and you need computer controlled life support? What if its the brain and you need the works? If she had been left to God she should have died 15 years ago. It seems to me thats its only worse because you die more qucikly if its heart or lungs?
There are so many questions that are completely arbitary. At what point are you playing with gods will? When you turn on the life support machine? When you turn it off again? When you put the feeding tube in? When you take it out again? Or is it a sliding scale, that depends on the complexity of the life support measure? These are questions I dont worry about I stopped believeing when I realised the only reason I went to church is because my dad did and he only went cos his dad did. The other thing that seems curious is how people get so hot under the collar about this when the US putsmore people to death than any other country except those on Amnesty Internationals black list. It seems to me that when someone who goes into a room fine and comes out in a bag you have to think twice.

The overwhelming majority of both philosophical and medical literature disagree. You are, in effect, comparing a feeding tube to a fork, which is absurd.

Again, the need for externally supplied nutrition and hydration is normative; artificially controlled breathing/circulatory/etc. apparatus is not.

I think it's more akin to a baby bottle. I don't expect to change your mind about this. I'm just pointing out that the Pope's manner of death was consistent with Catholic teaching.
