Yep, it's that time of year again -- to line up at the tanning beds. I just wanted to start a discussion about this. Why do women and some men feel the need to have a tan? What's wrong with fair skin? My skin is very fair and I've contemplated putting on fake tanning lotion to look tan, just because I guess, but part of me just wants to be pale and say fuck it. Tanning beds are very unhealthy and have been linked to skin cancer as well as too much sun exposure. I just wanted thoughts and comments on this, thanks.

i totally disagree with tanning . My cousin did a paper for one of the courses at the U where she attends and the tanning beds have 3 x's the amt of UV shit in it than the sun. She was totally disgusted. Oh the other hand my sister tans all the time and you can tell her skin is so not the colour its supoosed to be because its like a orange brn.

<her cockiness> to me is always *oh well at least i'll look good in my coffin you won't your white. Well yah i am white but i have a bit of a tan but not friggin brn black like her because she tans so much
that bothers me because i don't want my one and only sister to die from cancer

I don't understand the whole appeal of tanning. I love being my natural skin color. I don't see why I should have to go and change it. I think it's ridiculous.

It's nice to have a healthy, natural looking tan...Spend some time outdoors and that will do the trick (well, not if you live in England!)
I am not a fan of fake tan. It looks awful!! I got a slow tanning lotion and though it look alright, I'm really pale, but it kind of suits me. I don't need to be tanned to feel good about my skin, it's very healthy the way it is.
It's funny, because when I travelled in South East Asia, all the suncreams had whitening components, so people there dont want to get any darker, but here in the West, some people just want to be a darker! and they PAY shitloads of money to burn their skin and spray fake tan, I mean, what's the point? I guess no-one is entirely happy with what they have.

tanning is such a silly superficial thing to do. i find it Gross, and Love my fair skin. although physicalities are of no relevance to me, i am drawn to (for just myself really..) pale skin.

I always thought fair skin was beautiful, as long as you don't have a problem with blemishes or acne. In that case darker skin can mask that and even make you look better.

I can't tan. Even after festival season I'm only alittle darker than when I start. I would never try a tanning bed. I just dont see the point. And in my mind the whole blond hair with tanned skin thing is such a cliche it's boring (sorry if your blond and tan)

I like to sit out in the sun and relax...that;s my tanning. It's usually at the park or the beach with family, and we're all just there to have some fun.
I find I like it when I have some color to my skin, only because I'm not just pale, but purple. It sucks. Nothing looks good on me, no matter the hair color, the clothes, anything. When I have just a little color, I look so much healthier and I even feel better. The sun just gives me more energy and relaxes me at the same time, and i love the way I look and feel afterward.
That said, I stay totally away from tanning beds, fake tanners, etc. I hardly ever "tan" but I like the little bit of color I get from being outside.

I used to go to tanning beds, back when I was 18. I was super dark believe it or not, despite being fair skinned. Anyway, I haven't gone since. I must admit that I loved having even color everywhere (yes, I always tanned in the buff) however, I know it's absolutely horrible for my skin, which is what makes me not do it.

So, I go for the natural sun-kissed glow of summer. I don't lay out, I just get sun when I'm out with the kids, which is fine by me.

I do think I look a lot better with a tan, just not char-grilled in the tanning bed. [IMG]

i like being tan, but i find it to be a seasonal thing. it's unnatural to live in the midwest and have a tan in fucking january. i wouldn't ever go to a tanning place, i think that's so fake. occasionally, in the summer, i lay out, but it's so boring and hot and humid. bleh. my tan comes mostly from just hanging out outside, not intentionally trying to get tanned.

serisouly though i love my skin color. i get darker in the summer from being out in the sun :D its great. the idea of tanning beds are ridiculous to me. i think they cost too much and its not worth the risk on your body. ive seen girls darker than me climb in those tanning beds. natural tans are not only free, but they look much better

I like having the color to my skin. I'm pretty pale.
I go to the tanning bed once a year and the rest I get from the sun.

I am fair skinned and quite proud of it. I don't think I "look better" being tan at all. I have a nice milky white cream colour. It is pretty and healthy.

Besides, have you ever seen those porn stars who have bathing suit tans?

LOL. Tan lines are absolutely hilarious.

I'm extremely pale...my sister goes to a tanning bed. She looks unnaturally tan *see gallery*...I don't find that attractive at all.

i think tanning beds are really silly. i naturally tan easily and get dark in the summer just from being outside. i love laying in the sun lazily and will do so in the nude or my bathing suit which helps me look more even lol, but i kinda like the way farmers tans look ;) i dont mind having super dark arms and shoulders. but i think the dark orange girls i see walking around in the dead of winter are pretty ridiculous.

I think a little tan is alright, I'm usually light as hell, and when I am I look sick... so I wear make up to look better and stuff like that, but when I have a tan I look healthier. I don't thing it's necessary to go tanning 3-7 days a week every week, that's just unnatural and some girls just don't look right that dark. I little color is a good thing though.

during the winter, when i was without children, i would use a tanning bed 3 times a week for 15 minutes while wearing SPF50. seasonal affective disorder's a bitch. it worked awesome. in the summer, i spend a great deal of time in the sun, in spf 50. but i still tan a little. i look better.
