Cre - I'm not sure if mine is an embroidery machine per se (at least not on the scale of my Mom's which can do pictures, designs, monograms, etc.), but it does have some fancy stitches on it that I used for this. Doing them in orange thread on an orange shirt was maybe not the best idea but it looks cool close up.

Ursula - It's a cotton. Hancock Fabrics has this line called Quilter's Shades in all different colors dyed just like this. I don't know if they have them where you are but the one in Charlotte is having a really great sale right now.
