If cannabis was legalised and taxed, think of how much revenue that could create? I think people understand what it is about, as with most things it is about multi-national corporations making profit. It's got fuck all to do with ecology or sustainability. Put that to the people vote, and see what the result would be? Society will always require leaders, but they must earn their following. If they earned our trust, then people would listen to them. They must only be there to guide us, not dictate to us. They are supposed to be servants of the people, that is what Tony Bliar said on the 2st of May 1997. Not sure how you work that out. Push-button democracy would empower the people and take power and wealth away from centralised governments. I'm not saying it's a flawless system in the light of our current political crisis, but ideologically I see no reason why it cannot work. We could even introduce such a system gradually, starting off with things like drugs laws (for example) until society learned to take control of itself again, instead of being pampered by the nanny state. You see, the system has made us collectively weak, and we must learn to stand on our feet again, stand up for our own interests.
I seriously doubt this new push button democracy would vote to legalise cannabis, we have an aging and conservative population, this would be one of those knee-jerk moral majority issues without a doubt. The way to get recognition for the case defending the minority who use it and to get the radical change in thinking required needs vision, forward thinking and leadership, not the whim of the masses who don't support anything they don't understand ... this is a case in point. Selflessness and thinking about the right thing to do for those other than yourself will not happen if you simply take a majority vote on every issue. It's a lovely idea, but somewhat naively idealistic in my view. Those with minority concerns would be even more marginalised than they are now...
We stand a better chance that leaving it to the government. At least the people's vote would be based upon what they want, and not what is going to get them re-elected. Like I say, somethings should be voted on locally. I reckon a legalise cannabis bill would have no problem going through in places like Brighton, Brixton and Camden. At the very least there would be cannabis available for medical users. You cannot homogenise society in such a away as to make the law same across the whole land, not on everything, which is why some things like that should be decided locally. If you happen to like a smoke, and you live in a county where everyone is a boring old fart and they vote against it, you can always just go to a neighbouring county to buy it, or even move there. We should really start by abolishing a lot of laws like this anyway. Not if most things were decided locally.
i dont understand politics, but i usually vote for whoever isnt labour or bnp.. i have no interest in it either..
Would the same thing be true of healthcare, capital punishment, benefits - all local laws, policies and services specific to certain cities or regions, with taxes raised locally and spent locally? If not, who would decide which issues are local ones and which national ones?
You've just set cannabis legalisation back five years. Tell us that the encore would be "One Tin Soldier" and you'll make it ten.
I am not old enough to vote for another month BUT I voted green in both elections on my mum's behalf cos she didn't know who to vote for and persuaded my dad that no2eu yes2democracy was a better party than UKIP, which took a lot of debating...
