It seems to me there are areas of discourse that take on a religious tone in terms of emotional objections being raised in lieu of analytical arguments. To me it seems this is a major impediment to humanity. What areas of investigation are deserving of their taboo designation? Are there ANY areas that we should not discuss in a measured, reasoned, scientific way?
No but to discuss things in a measured way requires that our measures be standard. In the same turn all things are lawful but not all things are helpful and helpful is a matter of set and timing. Rational discourse doesn't mean much to a hungry baby. We can rationally heal the emotionally wounded by attending to their needs.
So on the subject of taboo. Taboo and hero worship are both measures of the same cultural artifice instilled from the first moments of being born into a clan. It is a subliminal conditioning the purpose of which is to distinguish the things we do from the things we don't or to distinguish us from them. The science clan has taboos like unfounded belief and falsification of data and it's hero's like the hadron colider and the hubble telescope. Myself being homo sapien am both tasting and knowing. Nothing prohibits these aspects and their heroic venture is in simply being.
the faerie spark shall not be investigated reasonably , however , it may investigate you . look out!!
Not really. Some taboos are instilled for the sake of health for instance don't shit on the kitchen table. There is more to taboo than topic. Taboos once instilled become subconscious aversion, not to be confused with a prohibition. The habitual is not a disease although there may be dis-ease in habit if you are trying or being forced to change it.
The only divergence I have from anything spoken here is that while we don't know how to access that state the way can be taught because we share our thoughts and where one goes any has access to. That is why we are fond of inventors.
our disagreement here, is one of defining the term differently. the thread is about subjects being taboo to discuss. if no one ever discussed the topic of shitting on the kitchen table, it is quite possible, that some people might not realize this is a very bad idea. remember hygene WAS at one time a taboo topic. which time was fallowed by something called the plague. if anything, not shitting on the kitchen table rather makes my point.
Yeah, what taboo topic were you discussing in the post I quoted of yours? That might be the subject of the thread but your statement was how you think taboo gets there and what you think it's results are. If you meant to state something different I still don't know what it is. How does not shitting on the table make your point. There is a taboo against sexually molesting children do you think everyone is ill because of it? We have a taboo against infanticide although it is common in the animal kingdom and I don't think that is a crazy idea.
Fair enough It is not as good when you point out the sarcasm so clear anyway. Sorry for making you do it anyway I'm pretty sure the plague was caused for a large part because of lack of hygene, but can we be sure it was because the topic of hygene was a taboo?
Yes hygiene played a part. Because sewer systems were relatively non-existent, and trash/waste was just dumped indiscriminately, rat populations flourished, as did the fleas carrying the plague. Combine that with no understanding of virology and superstition and you have the perfect storm for plague. Superstition even helped the plague as somewhere along the line the notion was adopted that cats were causing the plague, so they set about killing cats, which further increased the rat population and the spread of the plague.
