Trouble is I've been trying to do it banjo style. Sometimes chords that sound right strumming don't work as well when you're picking so you gotta improvise a bit.

Well... that's what I've always done.. I really don't strum when I play banjo... I do a lot of muting then really fast improvised runs based on the chords.

 

I think I just need to get stoned and let my fingers figure it out.

Dulcimer....

Zithers are a whole category of instruments that have strings which stretch over a resonating chamber but don't extend beyond it. You could call a fretted dulcimer a zither. They'd also say that a hammered dulcimer, a guitar-zither, an autoharp, a concert zither, and plucked and bowed psalteries, are all zithers.... (trying to not cause confusion)... it's a general term/classification... it's not an actual instrument.
