This is not depression, this is boredom. Some jazz musicians are still very inspiring and aren’t worse than some time ago. For example, Fred Anderson, Odyssey Band, Medeski Martin & Wood, Art Ensemble of Chicago, although they are in no way depressing. Also, modern Arabian musicians are extremely powerful sometimes, despite the fact that they are deep in their ancient tradition. The question, in my opinion, is not whether people play anything new (is there anything new at all in the extreme?), but whether they are authentic. And, by the way, it is better to represent the present than the future. Future is just an illusion
Some Tori Amos songs...particularly "Precious Things", are a very good blend of expressing depression and anger at the same time.
listen to some fergie or justin timberlake! If that shit doesn't get you depressed I don't know what will. seriously though, Built to Spill is good, thursday also.
David Darling, Cello..album, Dark Wood...Disturbing, haunting, creates a feeling of surreal unease. Read the liner notes...a brief, demented story inspired by the music. I loaned it to a psycholgist who destroyed the CD feeling it was too unsettling to be heard.
Carpet Crawlers, by Genesis My favorite, although it's depressing in a really bizarre tripped out way
There is nothing inherently different in electronic or acoustic instruments in that both just produce sound. In both, there is an infinite amount of combinations of notes, frequencies, beats, etc. There's so much that hasn't been done, in rock and in every type of music and every combination of them. As to the original threat question, maybe Smashing Pumpkins? If someone hasn't mentioned them already.
bauhaus and the southern death cult - yeah, pink floyd's the wall can be depressing, but their earlier material can be pretty upbeat.....there are some good depressing doors tunes as well
