vinceneilsgirl & Shambhala Peace, i'm sorry that you will forever be lost to modern society becuase whether you like to admit it or not the internet is part of the world whether you choose to accept it or not.
No. I'm actually quite saavy when it comes to the internet. I've designed several websites and done layouts for many people. I am just a realist. I know that too much dependency on ANYthing is not smart. I enjoy using this website, I spend a lot of time on it. But when I get back to school, I highly doubt you will see me here for a long time. Why? Because I have learned to prioritize. The internet is a tool. That's all it is. We also didn't need to have it either. The government could have chosen to kept it to themselves. But they didn't. So if they chose to regulate it - what do I care? I'll say it again. We have survived without it, we can go on surviving without it. Safe abortion? Please. Apples and Oranges. There are ways to communicate, people have always figured out how to do it around the government. Instead of sitting around and complaining about the government taking your internet away; perhaps you can do something.
You probably don't care you will end up a housewife in the suburbs. It's not going to be your problem until your son or daughter goes off to war and gets killed. And then if your government controls your access to free expression, maybe then it will be your problem.
So am I supposed to believe that being a hippy is all about paying attention to rediculous laws and lawsuits. Helmet laws? Being aware of the government seems a lot like keeping track of scores in sports. It's all kind of trivial and borring and you can't do much about it until election day when you vote for the democrat like every good radical should. Today the congress fucks up this, the next day they make this statement or resolution, for the next six days they debate what marriage is when any person capable of love is already well aware of what it is, eventually it turns into totalitarianism. There must be more to it than watching this horror show in constant outrage.
shambhala- i have to take a diffrent stand then gardener. i look at things as you have to draw a line and make a stand somewhere. the internet is an amazing tool and that's why we need to fight to protect it. your right bro there is more than just watching this horror show we call government. Stand up, speak out get the word out whats goign on let people know that the goevrment is slowly stripping them of thei rights to privacy. remember that there no hippie handbook (ok i lie there is) it's just what people call us and some of us call ourselves not what we are, we are what we are.
I realize that kids say they are something to have that title. Perfect example: Hippie. But there are some out there who are writing congress about loosing the neutral internet, about the environment, etc. I do get tired of the posers, but alas, sometimes you have to get through the posers to find the good kids.
Hippie is just a word, just a stereotype.. it doesn't matter whether or not people think of you as one.. as long as you know what you're standing up for. I don't know who I am, what I am.. but that's okay. As Joni Mitchell says; life is for learning. Now, believing in something.. following something you believe in.. that is something beyond any stereotype, beyond any group. I don't care whether you think I'm a "hippie" or not, I just hope that you can see that I care about this world and where things are headed. Environmental rights, animal rights.. these things are saved for the "hippies," correct? Well, if so then I'm what you'd consider a hippie- and I'm damn proud.
I don't do any of the things you just described. This is basically the only Internet site I use, I don't like partying, and I'm not constantly on drugs. And once I get to be your age, I doubt I'll be sitting on an internet forum cursing all juveniles. For a "hippie", you seem pretty full of hate.
Hmm... No. While I do agree that a lot of the young hippies are on drugs and not doing enough activismy stuff, you know you were doing the same thing when you were young. Second... you're generalizing way too much. A lot of them are like that. Not all of them. I, for one, am among the most politically active members of the community. And fifteen years old. And I use drugs, wear tye-dyes, party, and listen to rock and roll (and folk, world music, blues, and a variety of other genres). Oh, and I use myspace way more than is I should. So what. I've found it's an excellent way to not only stay in touch with friends over the summer, but keep in touch with the world of activism and current events in my community. About the privatization of the internet... while more hippies should be interested, as this is mostly a free speech issue, it's more of an issue among tecchies (which I admit, I am one), as they're the ones who it will most effect. I've been working on spreading the word about it around (mostly through myspace, which works suprisingly well). To you who do fit the description put by gardener, get involved. Start getting active in your community. Gardener, lighten the fuck up. Peace
Gardener your words are sincere and true. We need to be aware. People list such "values" such as "caring about animals" and "saving the rain forest." Those are good values to have, but useless when they are not aware of their contribution to all of the problems. (Not to put the worlds problems on the people, we live under a corrupt world government) We need to be aware. I'll post in another one of your threads sometime you seem to know your shit. Look up mine sometime.
It is not about the Internet, it is about FREEDOM!! Wake up and pay attention, people! There are evil forces at work here and they are picking your pockets right now. You will lose your freedom to those who can wrest it from you and use it to make MONEY!! That is what its about, because in our world today, money = power. Be vigilant and stand up against any force that tries to take away your freedom. It is the only hope for your children!
Brownxfoot, the balls in your court now. There are no formulas for this sort of thing. You can't learn it in a classroom. You have to value your rights and refuse to let others bully you or try to scheister you into giving them up. As long as there are some that say "Well I don't use that anyway." or "They are doing it for our protection.", they will have leverage. But there will always be some like that. But I think your job may be to make sure that doesn't become the accepted spin. Always question and ask for a point of view to be supported or explained, before you accept it as what has to happen. And if you have a right to effect the outcome and you don't agree, speak out/act out. But always do it "peacefully" and legally. These corporate dudes are just looking for a chance to discredit any resistance.
MySpace isn't the only site on the web that's going to be affected people. I used as an example because it's so popular. This very site may be one that many ISPs put low on their list of priorities, and it will either not load at all, or very slowly. SKYPE will be a thing of the past and you'll pay for every single conference or voice call you make on the computer. Plus if the telecommunications companies have their way your surfing habits will be monitored and shared.
