The republicans have destroyed welfare for the most part. A single mother of two children must now get a job within six months. So instead of raising her kids, the mother is working a job that doesn't even pay the bills, thus remains in poverty. The children are left without parental guidance, and many become delinquent, and then end up in prison. One out of every four black men are in prison. So instead of the tax payer paying $15,000.00 a year to keep a single mother and two kids on welfare, the tax payer ends up paying $40,000.00 per child to keep them in prison. That's $80,000.00 instead of $15,000.00. There are over three million Americans in prison. That's more than any other country in the world, including China with a population of over a billion people. The U.S. only has 300 million people.

The republicans are trying to destroy the food stamps program also. They have a bill in congress right now to do just that. If it passes, it will take the food from all children in poverty. This bill also ends farm subsidies for American food growers. That's going to make the price of food go way up.

If the republicans win in November they will be destroying Social Security and Medicare, which will make prisons the new retirement homes for the elderly. Because in prison health care is free, so all the old people will need to go to prison because they won't be able to afford their doctor bills without Medicare.

^ my uncles ex has been getting food stamps, welfare, and government housing since her kids were born more than ten years ago. And my Uncle supports the kids financially. So no, you are wrong.

You should know the facts before you say someone is wrong, so you don't look stupid.

Charities have spoken of their fury over changes to the welfare system which from tomorrow will force unemployed single parents with children about to start school to find a job or risk losing part or all of their benefits.
These 124,000 single parents with children aged five and six were given only eight weeks notice of the fact that they would have to move from income support to jobseeker's allowance (JSA). Previously, lone parents of older children have been given up to 12 months notice, giving them a greater chance of planning ahead and improving their skills and qualifications.
According to research to be published by the charity Gingerbread on Monday, single parents moving to JSA now also face a much harsher time finding "a family-friendly job in a hostile labour market characterised by low economic growth and high unemployment".

LOL – ok this is just hot air and spin - CNS news is owned by Media Research Center whose sponsored by very right wing groups like the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation, Sarah Scaife Foundation and the John M. Olin Foundation.

The report (as someone also pointed out) is compiled by the extremely right wing libertarian group the Cato Institute.

I think it hilarious that anyone would look at this and think it even slightly objective? Are some on the right so far gone that they take a piece of obvious propaganda as some kind of ‘truth’?

If you go to the actual report you quickly notice that virtually all the calculation that the author uses are ‘Author’s Calculations’ in other words the author has looked at the figure then decided what they are.

I mean he seems to includes Medicaid in his calculations which is usually separated from the Social Security/Welfare budget so that would knocked off 228 from his headline 668 for a start.

Again I post this from the Eight Great Myths About Welfare site

MYTH: Poverty and homelessness have grown in spite of the trillions of dollars spent since 1965 to help the poor; therefore, these programs have failed.
FACT: These programs have succeeded and are succeeding in getting people out of poverty and homelessness. As Michael Harrington reported in The Other America (originally printed 1962, most recently printed http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/068482678X/realchangehomele/"]1997) not everyone was living like Ward and June Cleaver in the 1950's. Poverty hovered around 20 percent. In 1964, Johnson declared "war on poverty" with his "Great Society" program. The increased welfare payments reduced poverty to 12 percent by the end of the 60s.
As Nancy Amidei said in a speech at the Family Reunion conference in Tennessee, 1992: "Joan Growe, the Secretary of State of Minnesota is a former welfare mom. Judge Sedgewick, an appeals court judge, is a former welfare mom. Two members of the Montana legislature, two members of the Wisconsin legislature, a couple members of the Pennsylvania legislature. (Probably members of the Tennessee legislature are all former welfare moms.) Whoopi Goldberg is a former welfare mom. Carol Burnett is a former welfare kid. Bishop Weakland in Milwaukee is a former welfare kid. Six members of Congress (that I have been able to identify) are former welfare kids. I have run into former welfare kids and former welfare moms who are now PhDs and County Executives, nurses, career Army officials, police, Head Start aides. They are all over the place; they are terrific people and they are welfare success stories."
More people, new people, become poor and homeless daily, therefore the numbers grow. The increase in poverty and homelessness is due to grave problems in our economy, like the income of the lower 20 percent of the economy falling during the "economic boom", 6 out of 10 of the "new jobs" being under $10 an hour -- a wage at which no one can afford a market rate apartment -- racism (the median income of a Hispanic family is $3000 a YEAR), sexism, and a widening income gap. It is not due to welfare programs failing.

A government program that has failed despite the pouring in of billions of taxpayer dollars.

    Shock, surprise, dismay.

And this is the same government that people think are going to fix the "health care crisis"?

    Fucking idiots.

Ok I’m all in favour of reform of governance to improve it, so in the context of this thread what would you do about it?

I wouldn’t call you a bitch just misguided and misinformed what you are promoting is the very old self serving con game of the deserving and undeserving poor. The deserving being those that don’t ask for help and so don’t need any. And the undeserving being those who do ask for help thereby showing that they are scroungers and wasters who don’t deserve any help.

So it was plain - the argument went – that there was no need to give assistance to the disadvantaged.

The problem was that these people were often the same people but just at different stages of life or circumstance.

This is very similar to the right wing argument often put forward today that if people are responsible and make “better decisions” they don’t need assistance but if they’re irresponsible and make “poor decisions” (like having children for instance) they don’t deserve assistance.

This deserving and undeserving argument can often lead to Social Darwinist tendencies that the undeserving are inferiors that shouldn’t be allowed to breed.

The problem is that these people are often the same people but just at different stages of life or circumstance.

The thing is that the neoliberal ideas that many right wingers support are not about seeking full employment as the Keynesian based models are, it is about having unemployment because that is one of the means of driving down wage prices. It is the same reason why neoliberals oppose social programmes because their removal would also increase the possibility for exploitation, as in work or starve.

LOL – oh yep isn’t it just rotten when opponents of your ideas turn up and ruin your right wing love in. :)

I’ve put up my disagreements now can you address them?

What's "rotten" is your snotty, condescending presentation of your usual circular argument -- one based on little or nothing more than what you may have read and find to conveneintly support your own socialist ideology.

To what end? Your "disagreements" only support the continuation and/or expansion of programs and practices that have, after many years of implementation, very effectively demonstated their own failure.

The only thing I had wrong is that I thought we were all talking about the USA welfare system. Everyone else was, and you didn't specify that you were talking about a completely different country. You might be understood better if people know what you're talking about.

Edit: upon Rereading I see that you gave stats on Americans while talking about another countries welfare (without mentioning that).

    Stoopid is what Stoopid does.

You called out the OP for using a biased right wing source.......and then you used a personal web page of a self proclaimed left wing radical as your own source. Am I the only one that sees the hypocrisy in that???

LOL – why is it when right wingers haven’t got any rational answers they start shouting socialism?

Maybe they’re actually hoping nobody will notice they haven’t actually given rational answer.

Yes I’ve read a lot, listened a lot, watched a lot, lived a lot and experience a lot - how else can you learn? The arguments I present are a product of my learning experience are you saying your ideas are a product of something else?

    Letlovin

Ok I quoted the Cato Report itself, an economics reporter for CNN the myths one. So I used three sources in my replies.

Ok so far we have had attacks on me for supposedly being a snooty socialist and a hypocrite but no rational counter arguments.
