when SOME americans say indian, people assume native american. so then they say, no, asian indian/ indian from india/ south asian.

official forms say indians are asian. they have the same basic trends in education. they are overrepresented minorities in similar fields (medicine) and underrepresented in similar fields (acting). most universities have the south asian student association which serves as a term to unify indians, pakistanis, sri lankans, bangladeshis, nepalis, etc.

what the people around you say everyday isn't the only thing out there. some people call pakistanis middle eastern? many say gtfo, different ethnic group. pakistan and india was one country before the mid 1900s. besides, ask a middle easterner if a pakistani is just that, and they'll laugh in your face as well. it's not uncommon.

Agh, the hypersentivity (4 pages etc). I'm not hypersensitive...just one person was deaf. Very very deaf....so it seemed like I was making a bigger deal out of things. That part makes sense now. Cheers. I just didn't figure I was being hypersensitive and nothing I have said in this thread is radical...so I didn't understand what he was on about.

it's okay to say this stuff if you add little tags like the bolded. different experiences bring different insights. don't push it as absolute, especially if a good chunk of people beg to differ.

Somthing tells me the person was trying to make a joke about it, saying he was a white black person. Because lets say he was being serious... from the looks of it, people reacted, and I'm sure they did then in the class too... I would think that if he wasn't joking than he would clearify it right away by saying he was born to a white family in africa. Even if he was joking though, people overreacted WAAAAY too much. I mean, this woundn't have even happened in my high school, let alone my university.

yeah, true, there's no point in arguing further. In defense that it wasn't out of the blue, she said something similar to me the other day, and I dismissed it . Seeing it again, I felt the need to expand.

And I don't know how many times I have to tell you that here we are. I am in ENGLAND so really, I don't give a fuck what you call Indians over there. Over here, everyone from Asia is, wait for it, an asian! HT knows perfectly what I'm talking about so I don't see why you felt you needed to say anything anyway.

And yes, I get your point, you don't have the same definition as me. It doesn't mean you have to keep telling and telling me. Honestly, it makes me feel bad, and yeah, it probably shouldn't, but it does and I'd appreciate if you would be kind enough to stop stressing it so much.
