Drugs is too optimistic a view of life. It's important to hemorrhage without escape until one dies. And that is only life.
So you think that people who chose not to drugs are a slave to the establishment? The whole point is the have a choice. If people are your friends, they won't care if you don't smoke. Are you prepared to handle the fact that these are illegal activities? Never do anything just because you think someone else wants you to. That is not a leadership quality. If your family has a history of addiction, I would not touch the stuff. It is hereditary. There are too many wastes of space out there as it is...
I think you're grossly overestimating the importance of drugs. Needing a substance to think freely isn't thinking freely bubba... you're making yourself a slave to it. You want to be accepted and you think this group won't fully accept you unless you're a pot smoker?? Sounds like a pretty conditional acceptance- and not worth the effort to pursue. If you have to change anything about yourself to belong to any group then its members won't accept you as you are. This is a "hippie" group? If they're hippies I'm a belly dancing Sherpa who conducts guided tours of the Florida Rockies. Oh- and they're no more your friends than they are hippies. Almost everything will have an adverse effect. If you value your voice then I suggest you not smoke pot. I can tell you that marijuana does not do any long term damage to the brain BUT heavy use will almost certainly make it more difficult to keep up with a busy day to day schedule and it isn't likely to do anything but harm your ability to study- mostly by making you not give a damn about studying. Are you serious about your dream to become a champion for human rights and get a law degree? It'll likely become a pipe dream if you decide to pursue acceptance into social groups that value drug use over intelligence and character. I'm not telling you never to smoke pot or never experiment- I am saying that you should be smart about it- Ideally wait until you have your diploma- realistically try it when YOU are ready and not because some fashion fad clique that couldn't give a flying fuck about you says you have to. You'd be every bit as much a slave to them as you would the establishment by being an obedient taxpaying clone. This culture severely over thinks the drug issue on both sides. The pro drug side tends to be all about how perfectly harmless everything is and often promotes a conspiracy theory style rhetoric that, whether or not it has any basis in fact, severely cripples any credibility they might have. On the other hand, the staunch anti-drug crusaders would have you believe that taking a single hit off a joint will cause your life to capitulate into the dark recesses of junkie status and that any recreational use would render your mental capacity to that of a dormant juniper bush. I can tell you that the truth will invariably be somewhere in the middle. Drugs will affect different people differently- and a lot has to do with their approach to using them. Placing that much importance on this decision tells me that your approach is completely wrong- ditch the drugs and the druggie clique. Revisit the question when you are wise enough to comprehend how unimportant it really is.
i was 15 when i first smoked pot and i don't regret it, but i think you have the wrong idea about drugs in general. i think it's only the right time to do a certain drug after you've become genuinely curious about its effects (not the lifestyle around it), and done LOTS of research. i think to start smoking pot with the mindset you have now would be a waste.
That's a real drug issue right there Congratulations in being accepted into the hippe group. It already sounds like you belong there! My advice for you is to read
surprised nobody already said this, but if you're worried about cannabis smoke ruining your voice (though I highly doubt it), just use a vaporizer.
i found my soul while singing on mushrooms, i'm a much better singer since i started smoking/mind expanding. but i don't really trip much anymore and i smoke a couple times a week... i think you sound like an intelligent person. just monitor yourself, don't ever depend on the "drug" for anything. occasional use of these substances in the right setting can definitely help you awaken and break free, i recommend trying them if you are in good mental health.
