Some people stroke fast, some slow. Some use lotion, some do not. Some will rub the head of their junk, some will not. I like to rub the underside of my pecker. It's whatever floats your boat. If anything, the way you stroke, with the pausing, may build self-control which in turn, would make you last longer. In my case I don't do what you describe for most of the session but I sometimes do when I am getting close to cumming. It's as if one part of me is saying "stroke fast, you need to cum" and another is saying "don't get too close, prolong the pleasure" and this is the compromise - bursts of a few fast strokes separated by pauses.
