If I am honest, I do not see either any better morally. But, I would rather my family kill an animal to eat, rather than just to wear. I don't like either, but the idea of fur coats makes me sick. Everyone is going to see it differently, but to me I hate it.

How do you feel about all the other aspects of your own life that result in the death of animals? The tailings from gold mines and tar sand oil they use to make computers, the sulphuric acid (killing whole lake ecosystems) from the coal-power that electrifies most of the east coast (or hydro-electric power that has choked off the Columbia River if you are on the west coast), etc.

Morally better or worse than fur?

But surely you see that if the animal is to die, meat and fur should both be utilized.... Throwing away one is as bad as throwing away the other, they're both valuable for their respective uses.

Vegetarianism and veganism are about choosing to live ethically and compassionately in accordance with one's conscience. The choices they make in order to live this lifestyle are a luxury to someone who lives in a place where that is not possible. If you do not have the choice, you cannot be judged for doing what you must to survive. I am not going to tell an Eskimo that they have to give up whale blubber and seal meat and take up vegetarianism, and start importing all-natural organic cotton or a $500 coat from Patagonia to wear instead of fur, because they would die.
However, I will agree that poaching an animal for the sole purpose of making a fashion statement is pretty much always wrong on the basis that it is a waste of resources and pointlessly cruel. As long as there are starving children in the world, we should not be wasting potential food. Overhunting and overfishing are just as bad, because if these creatures go extinct, that is one less resource and one less species (ie: less diversity, which is always a disadvantage to the ecosystem) to help support the ever-expanding population. To us, it's self-defeating and stupid. To the planet, it's detrimental to the natural balance on which everything depends (yes, even us).
But then, I guess if we're all supposed to eat in-vitro meat in a few years, the powers that be will just turn to that as their "solution"... Meanwhile, the people that actually truly depend on these ecosystems in the purest form will go extinct, and the hippies will cry and rage and the corporations will shrug their shoulders, hold a vigil and go back to what they do best: Mindless over-consumption and worshiping the Almighty Dollar.
I wonder when they'll perfect the biodome...

You beat me to it. Basically everything you just said.

    I do.
    Good Looking. Interesting. Colourful.
These are words that could be attributed to fish, but "cute"? Er, no.
    Lets agree to disagree.

Personally, I agree "The Hunt" isn't just for fur.
The issue that troubles me is what is the No.s that are killed to maintain the quota for the fashion industry?
I wouldn't try and separate the No.s that are used for food, their skin or simply disposed of...
What troubles me is the excuse used by seal killers (all around the world), the Japanese whale killers and others: It's just for research. We need to kill X amount to do our research. To help preserve fishing resources/environment. For food. For clothes.
The indigenous populations right to maintain their way of life. Etc.
What makes me sick is this is an excuse for the profit hungry who constantly promote/justify the killing of animals to perpetually increase their profits.
Like I said earlier, certain industries promote the killing of different fish so they can maintain their profits.
This is true with other animals too.
Do the ludicrous No.s of seals really need to be killed on a yearly basis?

The trouble is, the killing of animals maintains jobs.
Some communities rely on killing animals to live.
I wouldn't say ban all killing of fish, seals or perhaps even whale...
...but good grief, it has all got totally out of control and far too political.
